WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor

Chancellor Sandra Haynes provides overall leadership for WSU Tri‑Cities, represents the campus within the University system and serves as a liaison with local communities, organizations and industries. Chancellor Haynes serves as chairperson of her executive leadership council, which provides leadership for the campus community.

Short Biography

Sandra Haynes, Ph.D.

Dr. Sandra Haynes is the 7th Chancellor of Washington State University Tri-Cities and brings more than 20 years of successful, high-level administrative experience, stemming from leadership at both a doctoral granting university with very high research activities (R1) and a regional comprehensive institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dr. Haynes holds a faculty appointment as professor in the Department of Psychology. As a first-generation student, she recognizes the transformative power of higher education and its ability to be a true equalizer for individuals, regardless of life circumstance. 

Dr. Haynes maintains a clear focus on excellence in academics, exceptional student support, and service to the community and industry, which inturn enhances diversity, equity, and inclusion. She uses innovative, datadriven strategies to best fulfill the campus’ land-grant mission to serve regional industry needs through excellent education, research, and service 

Prior to her role as Chancellor of WSU Tri-Cities, she served 17 years at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, including as Deputy Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College of Professional Studies. Through her service at both WSU Tri-Cities and MSU Denver, she has overseen the design and construction of three academic buildings, and developed public/private partnerships to support regional development and growth. 

Dr. Haynes earned a Ph.D. from Colorado State University in Experimental Neuropsychology and re-specialized in Counseling Psychology at the same institution. With a distinguished record in teaching, Dr. Haynes has stayed active in scholarly practices and service. As an academic, she believes that regardless of position in the academy, it is vital to feed the life of the mind, contribute to disciplinary knowledge, and to be of service to the communities in which she lives and works.
