WSU is offering crisis support for WSU Tri-Cities students throughout the year. Students can access ProtoCall by calling 509-554-5684. Calls to ProtoCall are confidential, and staff is familiar with available services on the Tri-Cities campus and within the community and are available 24/7.

Sylvia Rangel-van Breda Vriesman, M.A. LMFT, is a licensed Marriage, Couple, and Family therapist, who specializes in co-occurring disorders of mental health and substance abuse-related issues and serves as the Assistant Director of Student Services and Student Counselor of Counseling & Wellness. She has been a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Washington since 2016. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Seattle University (2007); and a Master of Arts in Marriage, Couple and Family Therapy with an Addiction Track from Lewis and Clark College (2013). She has worked in various counseling centers that include residential, inpatient, outpatient, and K-8 school settings. Her clinical interests include social justice, co-occurring disorder treatment, crisis intervention, grief and loss, anxiety and stress-reduction, depression and mood concern treatment, resiliency, life transitions, and couple’s therapy. She joined WSU Tri-Cities in August 2020.

Theoretical approach: Her work is grounded in research and tailored to fit the unique needs of each client. She employs an evidenced-based, family systems framework within a cultural context model. Her approaches including the following therapies: brief solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral, narrative, gestalt, emotionally-focused, and other evidence-based treatments that will best fit your needs. Within these approaches, she actively incorporates the personal and cultural values and experiences that reflect the diversity that each individual brings.

The Peer Education Programs, Cougs Reaching Cougs and Peer Health Promotion, offers students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience working in the mental health and wellness fields with an emphasis on valuing and respecting diversity among individuals. The primary focus of their work is on outreach and psychoeducational activities that provide stepped-care wellness support for students and the campus community and in turn build foundational professional skills to work in behavioral and/or health-related fields. The Peer Educator Teams work under the close guidance of the current licensed mental health clinician.
