Why is New Coug Orientation Mandatory?

New Cougs are making a big commitment in time, money, and resources. Research shows that students who participate in orientation are better prepared to succeed by being set up from the beginning on how to navigate a university, learn at the college level, and develop self-agency as a young adult.

Do I have to do orientation if I'm a Running Start Student?

Orientation is a requirement of all WSU incoming students.

What is the cost of orientation?

Your New Coug Orientation fee is included in the mandatory $100 New Student Enrollment fee. The orientation fee covers the cost of the student plus up to 2 guests.

Can I reschedule my New Coug Orientation Session?

You can change your orientation date all on your own! Follow these quick easy steps:

  1. Login to your FutureCoug Portal here
  2. Click on the session you are currently registered for
  3. Click “cancel registrations”
  4. Return to the orientation registration page and register for a different session

What can families/supporters do during orientation?

Families and supporters attend all orientation sessions with their students. Families/supporters will also attend a special session just for them at the beginning of orientation while students meet their peer mentors. This is the only time families/supporters will be separated from their students.

How do I connect with my advisor?

You will receive communications when it is time to schedule your academic advisor. Transfer students typically meet with their advisor starting in March. First-year students typically meet with their advisor starting in May. All students who have not completed a college level English and/or Math class will need to take the Math Placement and/or Writing Placement exams prior to their advising appointment.

Approximately how long will the advising/registration appointment take?

Each appointment is scheduled for 45 minutes.

When will my Undergraduate Advising Hold be lifted?

The Undergraduate Advising Hold will be lifted upon completion of your advising appointment.

Where do new students confirm their major?

Students will confirm their major with their advisor at their first academic advising appointment.
