Methodology

The NACE standards and protocols expect a survey of all graduating students with a minimum 65% knowledge rate.  Knowledge rate refers to the students about whom first-destination knowledge has been learned.  The acceptable sources of outcome information include: direct communication, indications from social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.), employer web site/directories, and friend and family informants.  Students for whom no first-destination information could be gleaned are categorized as No Information Available and their number is reflected in the Knowledge rate only.

The timeline of knowledge accumulation was thus:

Sept.-Dec. 2015                                            Direct appeal through Qualtrics survey

January 2016                                                Social Media investigation

January 2016                                                Appeal to Faculty and Staff

The data elements for which the survey sought classification are:

Employed-Entrepreneur: Graduates who own their own business with several clients/customers.

Employed-Contract/Temporary: Graduates whose employment for a single client is limited to a single project or defined timeframe with an end.

Employed-Freelancer: Graduates who develop their own project, complete it, and sell it to a client; activities traditionally associated with artists, journalists, authors, etc.

Employed-Fellowship/Internship: Graduates who are preforming teaching/research supported by a university/outside agency or who are engaged in an experiential learning activity.

Employed-Other: Graduates who are employed but do not fit any of the above categories.

NOTE: the above “employed” categories fall into Full Time and Part Time classifications.

Continuing Education: Graduates who have been admitted to or are attending a school seeking a graduate/professional/vocational degree or credential (e.g. CPA license).

Service: Graduates who are employed with an agency that is providing assistance to groups or individual in the public interest (e.g. Peace Corps, Teach for America, etc.).

Military Service: Graduates who are serving full-time in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (reserve units do not fit this definition).

Seeking Employment: Graduates who have not reached a first-destination but who are looking for employment.

Seeking Continuing Education: Graduates who are actively working on gaining admission into a school for a graduate/professional/vocational degree or credential.

Not Seeking: Graduates who are not pursuing any first-destination.

More granular data regarding salaries, places of employment, and locations of employment are available, but on a smaller scale.
