ABOUT ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

The elementary education program provides the skills and knowledge to teach and guide school children in grades K-8.

All WSU Tri-Cities students seeking a B.A. in elementary education must also complete at least 20 semester hours in an endorsable area such as English Language Learning, Bilingual Education, Middle-Level Math, Middle-Level Science, or Special Education.

GREAT THINGS HAPPENING IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

First-Gen
A Latina first-generation college student born and raised in Pasco, Paola Mendoza chose WSU Tri-Cities to get classroom experience in bilingual education in the community she loves.

Award-winning research
Yuliya Ardasheva, a faculty member at WSU Tri‑Cities, has received one of two national Mid‑Career Awards from the American Educational Research Association’s Second Language Research Special Interest Group.

Education Summit
Every year, WSU Tri-Cities hosts the Education Summit in which local educators attend workshops, info sessions, and panels. Here, WSU Tri-Cities faculty share innovative techniques being utilized in the classroom.

COURSES:

You will take courses that cover a wide range of subjects in elementary education, which could include:

  • Developmental psychology
  • Learning and development
  • Classroom management
  • Early literacy

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

Successful completion of program course requirements alone does not guarantee admission to the teacher preparation program. In order to be considered for admission, students must submit an undergraduate admission application (if not already a WSU student) as well as an application for admission to the teacher education program in accordance with departmental deadlines.

UNIQUE BENEFITS OF STUDYING AT WSU TRI-CITIES:

WSU Tri-Cities offers the Alternate Route program, which is designed for students to complete coursework and become certified teachers in two years.

Students in the alternate route program earn academic credit through in-person evening courses with university faculty, courses situated in students’ jobs in area schools, and Prior Learning Assessments that let students how how they have met Washington’s teacher competencies through prior education or work experiences.
