SUMMARY:“Hibakusha at the End of the World” by Japanese film maker Hitomi Kamanaka
DESCRIPTION:History will be made on Friday\, March 9\, when an atomic-bomb survivor (hibakusha) from Nagasaki\,\nMr. Mitsugi Moriguchi\, will visit Richland and tour Hanford’s B Reactor\, which produced plutonium\nfor the Nagasaki atomic bomb. He will be accompanied by a student from Nagasaki University\, Ms.\nHanako Mitsuoka. \nThe visit is part of a Nagasaki-Hanford Bridge Project sponsored by Consequences of Radiation\nExposure (CORE)\, a Washington state nonprofit\, and funded\, in part\, by the City of Nagasaki.\nThe project is spearheaded by Professor Emerita Norma Field of the University of Chicago and\nAssociate Professor Yuki Miyamoto of De Paul University in Chicago\, who is a second-generation\nhibakusha (that is\, at least one parent is an A-bomb survivor). Trisha Pritikin\, an Oakland attorney\nactive with Hanford downwinders\, is also part of the project team. \nA press conference with the visitors will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the\nHanford Reach Interpretive Center\, 1943 Columbia Park Trail. \nAlso on March 9 at 6:30 p.m.\, the documentary film “Hibakusha at the End of the World” by\nJapanese film maker Hitomi Kamanaka will be shown at the WSU Tri-Cities auditorium.\nIn current usage\, the term hibakusha identifies all human victims of radiation. The film brings\ntogether footage not only from Japan and Hanford\, but also Iraq (victims of depleted uranium\nmunitions). \nFollowing the two-hour film\, there will be an address by Mr. Moriguchi and a question and answer\nperiod. The event is open to the public.\nMedia contact: Jim Stoffels\, 946-8087

SUMMARY:Public Information Session: Student conduct task force
DESCRIPTION:PULLMAN\, Wash. – The Washington State University Student Conduct Process Task Force has submitted 32 recommendations designed to make the university’s student conduct process reflect best practices nationally. \nThe recommendations are part of the report that the task force — comprised of 17 WSU faculty\, staff\, students and alumni — recently wrote after finishing a year-long\, comprehensive review of the current student conduct process. The report was submitted Jan. 22 to WSU President Kirk Schulz. \nThe recommendations address a variety of topics\, ranging from improving the ways in which students are informed and educated about the conduct process to revising the composition of the conduct board and providing new\, in-depth training to board members. \n“The task force carefully considered the input received from all areas of the university community\,” said Nancy Youlden\, task force co-chair and vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment\, WSU Vancouver. “We gained valuable insights from each step of the process. We believe these recommendations provide a solid foundation upon which to build a student conduct system that is among the best in the nation.” \nMajor recommendations \nThe report’s recommendations are grouped by six themes: \n\nStudent notifications.\nConduct and appeals board structure and member training.\nConduct process.\nReview of policies.\nEducational outreach to campus community.\nAssessment/evaluation strategies.\n\nMajor recommendations include: \n\nEnsure students are fully informed of their rights at the beginning of a conduct case and provide them with resources and access to university advisors and legal resources.\nImplement mandatory training for conduct board members in areas such as cultural competency and implicit bias\, conflict of interest\, and sexual assault and gender-based violence.\nImplement term limits for conduct board members.\nProvide alternative dispute resolution when it may be a suitable avenue to resolve a matter.\nPublish sanctioning guidelines that explain in plain language the types of sanctions students may face for a particular violation of community standards and the factors used to determine sanctions.\n\nThe report notes that the task force did not reach a unanimous decision on all of its recommendations. Dissenting opinions addressing the group accountability of student organizations and representation during brief adjudication proceedings are also included in the document. \nTask force members studied best-in-class conduct processes of other universities\, reviewed current research in the field\, and examined data about past WSU conduct cases. Members also reviewed more than 300 comments submitted by the WSU community and commissioned an online survey to gather additional input. \n“I appreciate the task force’s comprehensive review and the effort to ensure as many voices as possible were heard and incorporated throughout the process\,” said WSU President Kirk Schulz. \nRecommendations to be discussed at information sessions statewide \nThe task force’s recommendations will be discussed with the WSU community during a series of public information sessions held at campuses statewide and online Feb. 14-19: \nWednesday\, Feb. 14 \n\nWSU Pullman (Livestream: details to come will be posted at https://president.wsu.edu/student-conduct-process)\, 11 a.m.-noon\, CUB Jr. Ballroom\nWSU Tri Cities\, 4-5 p.m.\, East 266 (Auditorium)\n\nThursday\, Feb. 15 \n\nWSU Everett\, 2-3 p.m.\, Room 358\nWSU Downtown Seattle\, 6:30-7:30 p.m.\, 901 5th Ave\, Suite 2900\n\nFriday\, Feb. 16 \n\nWSU Vancouver\, 10-11 a.m.\, Firstenburg Student Commons 104\nWSU Spokane\, 3:30-4:30 p.m.\, Spokane Academic Center 341\n\nMonday\, Feb. 19 \n\nWSU Global Campus (Livestream: Details to come; see https://president.wsu.edu/student-conduct-process/)\, 5-6 p.m.\n\nNew conduct rules expected to be in place by fall semester \nAfter an administrative review\, Schulz will determine which of the recommendations to adopt. The WSU division of the state Office of the Attorney General will draft revisions to the Washington Administrative Code that governs student conduct based on the recommendations and administrative review. \nA formal hearing to invite public comment on the revised Washington Administrative Code will take place later in the spring. The University’s Board of Regents must approve adoption of revised rules\, which are expected to be in place by the fall 2018 semester. \nRegular updates about the next steps in revising the conduct progress will be published at https://president.wsu.edu/student-conduct-process/. \n  \nContacts: \n\nPhil Weiler\, vice president for marketing and communication\, 509-335-4742\, phil.weiler@wsu.edu

SUMMARY:Department of Energy Speakers Series - Groundwater Monitoring and Remediation
DESCRIPTION:Michael Cline\, Division Director\nSoil and Groundwater Division\nDepartment of Energy\, Richland Operations Office \nMr. Cline’s lecture will focus on the current sampling and monitoring program on the Hanford Site along with the groundwater remediation that is being performed. He will also discuss the process for selecting the remedy to be implemented.\nThe Hanford Site\, part of the DOE nuclear weapons complex\, encompasses about 580 square miles along the Columbia River in southeastern Washington State. During World War II and the Cold War period the government built and operated nine nuclear reactors for the production of plutonium and other nuclear materials. \nDuring reactor operations\, chemical and radioactive wastes were released into the environment and contaminated the soil and groundwater beneath portions of the Hanford Site.\nSince 1989\, using its authority under CERCLA\, DOE has worked to remediate this contamination. \nOver the lifetime of the Hanford Site\, DOE has installed and maintained thousands of wells to monitor and remediate groundwater and provide geologic data. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
