SUMMARY:Wyatt Wineinger to present history of Day's Pay Bomber
DESCRIPTION:On September 28th at the East Auditorium from 6-8PM\, Mr. Wyatt Wineinger\, the son of the pilot of the Day’s Pay bomber\, will be giving a talk about the history of the Day’s Pay bomber and it’s missions and crew. The Day’s Pay was a B-17 bomber purchased by employees of the Hanford Engineer Works in 1944 who were encouraged to “give a day’s pay and send a bomber on its way” to the European theater. The plane was purchased with these individual donations\, had a short ceremony here at the Hanford Construction Camp (about 10 miles north of our campus near the town of Hanford)\, and then flew over 60 missions in Europe before being excessed and scrapped at the end of the war. More historical information on the Day’s Pay can be found at http://www.historylink.org/File/7491. \nThe Hanford History Project is helping a local historian\, Don Sorenson\, plan events commemorating this history. Mr. Wineinger will be visiting us for several days from his home in Holcomb\, KS and this Presentation/Q&A will also feature artifacts and archival material from the Day’s Pay and some of the crew reunions. This talk is open to students\, staff\, faculty\, and the general public. Please tell your students and consider attending what is sure to be an interesting talk and discussion!

SUMMARY:Humanities Washington: Moment of Truth - Journalism and Democracy in the Age of Misinformation
DESCRIPTION:Event Description\nJournalism plays a vital role in a democracy—a free press is among the first institutions to be gutted in an autocracy—and a thriving press is a sign of civic health. But dramatically falling revenue\, the decimation of smaller newspapers\, and an increasing reliance on the whims of a few social media companies for reach has thrown the industry into turmoil. \nWorse\, public trust in journalists has become deeply polarized. According to a 2017 Gallup poll\, 72% of Democrats say they have a “great deal or fair amount” of trust in the media. Republicans? 14%. \nAre journalists simply neutral fact-finders\, or is there good reason for this mistrust? Does the media lean liberal? Are the struggles journalists face just growing pains as they adjust to a new digital age\, or signs of a slow death? How seriously should we take some of President Trump’s threats to journalists? Should we fear censorship or First Amendment curtailments? \nJoin us as we examine the state of the news\, featuring: executive editor of the Tri-City Herald\, Laurie Williams; award-winning journalist with NW News Network\, Anna King; and editor of the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business\, Kristina Lord. \nEvent is free and open to the public. Register here. \nThis event is part of our fall statewide series\, “Moment of Truth: Journalism and Democracy in an Age of Misinformation.” Click here for more information. \nWe thank The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for their generous support of this initiative and the Pulitzer Prizes for their partnership.

SUMMARY:Veteran Paper Workshop
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Veteran students are invited to reconstitute their military uniforms into paper. Like the material itself\, this process means something unique to each participant. \nIt is often the case that an abundance of unserviceable uniforms are donated for these workshops\, which enables people who no longer have their uniforms to make paper. These donated uniforms are sorted by branch of service and pulped separately. \nThe workshop will run throughout the day and veterans are welcome to join as their schedule allows. \n \nThe Peace Paper Project is an international organisation of hand papermakers\, art therapists\, social activists and fine artists. The organisation uses hand paper making across the globe to improve the lives of survivors of trauma and loss through the traditional practice of hand paper making. Since 2011\, Peace Paper Project has set up over forty collaborating studios worldwide and has made paper with over 30\,000 survivors.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
