SUMMARY:Campus Lecture: The Internet of Things: a Security and Privacy Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Billions of internet-connected devices autonomously controlling your home and environment: what could possibly go wrong? This talk will introduce the Internet of Things (IoT) and cover some of the security and privacy risks it exposes people to every day. From television sets that spy on you to remotely hacked vehicles\, IoT security and privacy issues affect everyone in our connected society. \nCome hear about the issues society faces\, the way forward for solutions from research and legislation\, and what you can do to protect yourself and your family from runaway security and privacy risks.\nDr. Glenn A. Fink has worked in areas including computer security\, visualization\, bio-inspired software design\, and human-centric computing at PNNL since 2006. He is a lateral thinker who excels in visionary leadership of multidisciplinary teams. His history of successful leadership is reflected in the many projects for which he has been Principal Investigator (PI). Dr. Fink was the project lead and primary inventor of several technologies including PNNL’s Digital Ants technology\, which earned an award for Excellence in Technology Transfer from the Federal Laboratory Consortium in 2018.

SUMMARY:Humanities Washington: Moment of Truth - Journalism and Democracy in the Age of Misinformation
DESCRIPTION:Event Description\nJournalism plays a vital role in a democracy—a free press is among the first institutions to be gutted in an autocracy—and a thriving press is a sign of civic health. But dramatically falling revenue\, the decimation of smaller newspapers\, and an increasing reliance on the whims of a few social media companies for reach has thrown the industry into turmoil. \nWorse\, public trust in journalists has become deeply polarized. According to a 2017 Gallup poll\, 72% of Democrats say they have a “great deal or fair amount” of trust in the media. Republicans? 14%. \nAre journalists simply neutral fact-finders\, or is there good reason for this mistrust? Does the media lean liberal? Are the struggles journalists face just growing pains as they adjust to a new digital age\, or signs of a slow death? How seriously should we take some of President Trump’s threats to journalists? Should we fear censorship or First Amendment curtailments? \nJoin us as we examine the state of the news\, featuring: executive editor of the Tri-City Herald\, Laurie Williams; award-winning journalist with NW News Network\, Anna King; and editor of the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business\, Kristina Lord. \nEvent is free and open to the public. Register here. \nThis event is part of our fall statewide series\, “Moment of Truth: Journalism and Democracy in an Age of Misinformation.” Click here for more information. \nWe thank The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for their generous support of this initiative and the Pulitzer Prizes for their partnership.
