SUMMARY:From Pity to Human Rights to Value Based: The Case for Authentic Inclusion of People with Disabilities with Sara Minkara
DESCRIPTION:From Pity to Human Rights to Value Based: The Case for Authentic Inclusion of People with Disabilities with Sara Minkara\nFrom Pity to Human Rights to Value Based: The Case for Authentic Inclusion of People with Disabilities \nEstimates show that there are 1 billion people in the world with a disability\, that is 1/7 of the world’s population. And yet\, this ratio doesn’t come close to being represented in any of our spaces. Sara will make the case for the authentic inclusion of the one billion people with disabilities in the world by weaving together her own lived experiences as a blind\, Lebanese-American\, Muslim woman\, and the work of her organization\, Empowerment Through Integration (ETI). Sara approaches the inclusion of people with disabilities from a value-based lens\, and her mantra that “the inclusion of all is a value for all.” Sara is on a journey to engage every stakeholder in society\, and invites every one of us to engage in breaking the cycle of disempowerment\, moving from a charity perspective\, to human rights\, and finally the value-based approach to inclusion. \nBio: This presentation is hosted by empowerment and identify speaker\, Sara Minkara. Sara a blind Lebanese/American woman who lost her sight at a young age being just seven years old. Sara is the founder and president of Empowerment Through Integration (ETI)\, which aims to empower and include young people with visual impairment in the Middle East-North Africa region. As a blind woman herself\, speaker Sara Minkara knows the struggle of being disabled in our society. She is an advocate in the areas of disability inclusion and social entrepreneurship. Since founding ETI\, Sara has continued her work in the social sector while also growing ETI from a summer camp to an organization that today reaches over 3\,000 individuals across Lebanon and the United States. \nWhen: November 18\, 2020 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm (PT) \nRegistration: Register for Sara Minkara’s Presentation on The Case for Authentic Inclusion of People with Disaiblities

SUMMARY:Empowered to Rise: Acknowledging My Multiple Identities with Jose Rosario
DESCRIPTION:Empowered to Rise: Acknowledging My Multiple Identities with Jose Rosario\nThis talk is where I share my personal story and discuss how acknowledging my identities changed the ways in which I engage in advocacy and clinical work. More specifically\, I talk about connecting with people because of my personal experiences of difference. This personal growth reminds me that each individual we support has intersecting identities that must be considered in order to truly promote healing. My hope is that by the end of the talk\, the audience begins to consider their identities and how this impacts their work. Above all\, I want to make it clear that our stories have power and being vulnerable allows us to connect. It is crucial to empower those who feel silenced to share their whole truth. \nBio: This presentation is hosted by empowerment speaker\, author\, and mental health and human rights activist\, Jose Rosario. Jose uses his disability to connect individuals to the world\, as a Latino\, gay man who utilizes a wheelchair\, Jose recognizes that there are common experiences that bring people together that taking stock of who we are gives us power. Rosario is a speaker\, author and above all\, an advocate. As a member of many diverse identity groups\, speaker José Rosario recognizes that there are common experiences that can bring people together and that taking stock of who we are gives us power. As a mental health professional\, José understands that this empowerment and the creation of a space to be vulnerable can lead to individual and group growth\, awakening agents for change. José is a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. student at Clark University where his work focuses on disparities in effective mental health care after violent events that target specific identity groups.\nWhen: November 4\, 2020 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm (PT) \nRegister for Jose Rosario’s Presentation on Empowered to Rise
