SUMMARY:CE Seminar: Metal Organic Frameworks for Removal of Xe/Kr from Nuclear Reprocessing Plants
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Metal Organic Frameworks for Removal of Xe/Kr from Nuclear Reprocessing Plants”\nAbstract: During reprocessing\, fission-product noble gases are released when the fuel cladding is breached and any fuel processing is performed. Two of these gases are radioactive xenon (Xe) and krypton (Kr). Although Xe is generated as fission product\, by the time the fuel is reprocessed\, all the radioactive isotopes have decayed to very low concentrations. Never-the-less\, non-radioactive Xe is at a higher concentration than Kr. Krypton has two long-lived isotopes 81Kr [t1/2 = 2.1 x 105 y] and 85Kr [t1/2 = 10.7 y]. Of these\, 85Kr is the isotope of regulatory concern and cannot be freely released if fuel younger than roughly 30 y is processed. In an operating reprocessing plant\, 85Kr is diluted with process air making its removal difficult because of the low concentrations. The existing technology is cryogenic distillation which is costly and energy consuming. We at PNNL\, focused on room temperature separation of Xe and Kr from nuclear reprocessing conditions using novel porous sorbents\, which shown to be more effective and cheaper. \nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Thallapally currently is a scientist working on the development of Hierarchical porous materials for Energy and Environmental applications including gas storage\, separation heating and cooling and so on. He is major contributor for DOE – EERE collaborative project with PNNL on crystalline solids for Hydrogen storage applications and played a major role in The Alliance for Collaborative Research in Alternative Fuel Technology (ALL-CRAFT) program on materials for Methane Storage Applications. His work has been highlighted in several external press including Science Editorial Choice and Chemical Engineering News\, and Chemical Communications. Dr. Thallapally’s research interests include Carbon Sequestration\, nanostructured materials\, catalysis\, crystallography and crystal engineering.

SUMMARY:IEEE Student Chapter: Patent Talk with Keith Grzelak
DESCRIPTION:Joint meeting of the IEEE Richland Section\, Nuclear & Plasma Sciences Chapter & INCOSE Cascade Chapter \nTOPIC: New Challenges to Patentable Subject Matter and Software Patentability \n6:00 PM on Thursday\, 22 OCTOBER 2015\nRoom CIC 120/120A\, WSU Tri-Cities\, Richland\, WA\nPizza and soft drinks available at 5:30 social time \nTOPIC ABSTRACT: Recent changes have occurred in how we determine patentable subject matter. IEEE-USA’s intellectual property policy committee (IPC) filed an amicus brief before the US Supreme Court in Alice v. CLS. A decision came down in June 2014 that raises more questions than it answers. The IPC subsequently filed comments to proposed guidance issued from the US Patent Office. The amicus position and comments will be reviewed to provide a summary of the questions that are now raised\, and a review of recent interpretations from the Federal Circuit will be summarized. The US Patent Office\, in the wake of this decision\, has withdrawn many software patents (for which notices of allowance had already been granted)\, and is currently aggressively issuing rejections for many software and business method patent applications based on patent ineligibility. The office has issued guidelines that are now used by way of example in order to determine subject matter eligibility and recent guidelines will be reviewed. \nSPEAKER: Keith Grzelak worked at General Motors and Ford Motor Company as a safety and crashworthiness engineer supporting numerous vehicle platforms. With his employer’s support\, he attended law school\, became a patent lawyer\, and currently represents engineers and scientists. He has worked in many technical areas including electrical\, mechanical and medical systems. He has worked for a broad range of entities\, ranging from Fortune 100 companies to start-up businesses\, including universities and faculty start-up entities.\nHe is currently a director of Wells St. John PS in Spokane\, Washington where he supports technology companies. He is active in teaching courses to STEM workers on technology policy and legal issues.
