SUMMARY:CE Seminar: Sustainability and Climate Change: Introduction to Planning and Implementation
DESCRIPTION:Title:  Sustainability and Climate Change: Introduction to Planning and Implementation\nAbstract: Since the Rio Summit of 1992\, Integrated planning for\, and implementation of\, national sustainable development strategies have remained challenging. Member States noted this challenge by recognizing in the Rio+20 Outcome Document the inadequacy of sector-based strategies\, and called for “holistic and integrated approaches to sustainable development” and the “need for more coherent and integrated planning and decision-making at the national … level”. Dr. Thomsen’s experience over the last two decades has demonstrated the inadequacy of sectorial and silo-based planning approaches to address complex global and national sustainable development challenges whose interdependencies and inter-linkages transcend individual sectors and national borders. National governments are now faced with developing and implementing strategies\, plans and policies that target systemic transformation and stabilization. This demands the acknowledgement and a better understanding of the dynamic interdependence and interconnectedness of numerous complex systems and sub-systems — such as water\, energy and ecosystems — and the impacts and changes they will undergo from various future threats\, including climate change. Dr. Thomsen’s seminar will present a brief overview on Integrated Approaches to Sustainable Development Planning and Implementation and to begin to explore how these impacts can be managed by adjusting natural or human systems in anticipation of or response to a changing environment in a way that effectively uses beneficial opportunities or reduces negative effects. Adapting to climate change is a complex\, long term process that requires people work together across organizations and should include a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders.\nBio – Dr. Keith Thomsen is an Environmental Engineering with 30 years of international experience in environmental engineering\, renewable energy and sustainability. He holds a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering from Oregon State University\, a Masters of Business Administration from California State University Fresno\, and a doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering from UCLA.  He has directed or managed more than 200 major projects with capital budgets exceeding $50 million throughout the United States and internationally.  His work has included research\, design and development of applied biotechnologies for the collection\, treatment\, processing and conversion of organic wastes into bioenergy\, bioproducts and resource recovery\, as well as substantial work in the area of improving the sustainability of built environment. Most recently\, he has been working on applied research and development of atmospheric processes including a portable multiple-wavelength differential absorption LIDAR (DIAL) system to provide real-time detection and characterization of specific chemical emissions.

SUMMARY:Herbert M. Parker Foundation Lecture by Dr. Antone L. Brooks - Irradiated: My Experience
DESCRIPTION:Herbert M. Parker Foundation Lecture by Dr. Antone L. Brooks – open to the public \nIrradiated: My Experience \nI will provide a brief review of my experience working with radiation\, especially internally deposited radioactive material.  My history starts in St. George Utah during the above ground testing of the Atomic Bombs at the Nevada test site.  I was a down-winder and had a first-hand view of the testing.  My MS degree at the University of Utah was directed toward following the movement of radioactive fallout from the A-bomb tests through the environment and into man.  It was on everything and in everything and my concern and fear for my friends\, family and personal health and welfare was high.  I went on to get a Ph.D. Cornell University to study the health effects of radiation with special emphasis on genetic alterations and cancer induction.  Since graduation I have invested my research life trying to understand the effects of radiation\, especially the type of radiation that I was exposed to\, internally deposited radioactive materials.  My extensive experimental research\, analysis and study of radiation has helped me put the risks for low doses of ionizing radiation into a framework where my fears of low doses no longer exists.   I realize that this area is of great importance and that many different opinions exist on the risk and I look forward to having an open and useful discussion on this subject. \n

Wondered if your voice had any influence? Want to do more than just vote? Ever been interested in running for political office? Learn how engineers can influence public policies\, rules\, and laws without being a politician or staging a massive protest. Jocelyne Gray\, PE\, President-Elect of Washington Society of Professional Engineers will share her experiences with influencing public policy and provide ways you can get involved at the local\, state\, and federal levels. \nBiography: Jocelyne is a graduate from WSU with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. As Director of Operations – Water at the Mason County PUD No.1 she is a water expert\, providing clean\, safe drinking water to several communities. She was selected as one of the 2012 Top Female Executives by Worldwide Who’s Who for her leadership in public utilities. Her operations department received the 2011 Grace Under Pressure award from the State Office of Drinking Water for professionally handling the E. coli contamination of two water systems in 2010 after the area received 200% of its normal monthly rainfall. \nJocelyne is currently the President-elect of the Washington Society of Professional Engineers. She has also been very active in the Society of Women Engineers since 1996\, encouraging young females to enter the profession.

SUMMARY:Herbert M. Parker Foundation Lecture - "Irradiated: How does the body respond to low doses?"
DESCRIPTION:Lecture from Dr. Antone L. Brooks of the Herbert M. Parker Foundation \nIrradiated: How does the body respond to low doses? \nThe major source of information for estimating radiation risks are the human A-bomb data.  These data provide a large data base on the cancer frequency following a single radiation exposure delivered in less than one second and resulted in a sound estimate of cancer risk. To estimate risk in the low dose region a linear extrapolation from these risk numbers is use.  Since most environmental radiation exposures are to lower doses which are delivered over a long time period the use of this model has been questioned.  To provide data that will help address this question an extensive research program was initiated by the US Department of Energy.  This DOE Low Dose Radiation Research Program to evaluate the response in the low dose region used the best available molecular and cellular responses combined with new technology.   This presentation will provide an overview of the data derived from this program and discuss their implications on risk assessment.
