SUMMARY:CE Seminar: Biorefinery Siting in the Western Montana Corridor
DESCRIPTION:Event Description:\nTitle: Biorefinery Siting in the Western Montana Corridor \nAbstract: Biorefinery siting is a key factor in creating a biofuel that is cost-competitive against traditional petroleum products. This research evaluates existing paper mills and industrial sites for their potential to be retrofit into a biojet fuel biorefinery based on a multi-criteria approach that integrates GIS\, economics\, and supply chain logistics. The research is part of a broader U.S.D.A. grant project to determine the feasibility of converting forest residuals (or slash piles) into biojet fuel to promote energy security within the US and revitalize rural economies in the Pacific Northwest. \nBio – Natalie Martinkus is a licensed Civil Engineer with 11 years of experience. She has worked for private consulting firms and for Yakima County\, mainly focused on stormwater and river modeling. She went back to school to pursue a PhD after the market crash in 2010\, and will graduate this summer with a PhD in Civil Engineering.

SUMMARY:IEEE Seminar: Arc-Flash Resistant Switchgear
DESCRIPTION:IEEE Power and Energy Society Chapter Richland Section/WSUTC Student Chapter\nSocial at 5:30pm\, talk at 6pm \nSpeakers: Mark Lopez and Jayamali Arambewela\, Crown Technical Systems \nAbstract: Equipment or insulation failure or short between conductors can give rise to arc flash that are fast and deadly and results in temperatures as high as 30\,000F. The arc pressure wave or blast accompanying an arc can cause an explosion and propel hot gases and molten metal to the surrounding atmosphere.  Exposure to arc flash can result in severe burns\, hearing loss\, blindness and even death. Arch resistant switchgear is specifically designed to contain and limit the damage incurred from an internal arc fault within the faulty switchgear or in the compartment.  Therefore it provides the highest degree protection to personnel against the effects of an internal arcing fault.  In this talk we will discuss the following topics (1) Arch flash causes and physical effects\, (2) what is an arc resistant switch gear\, (3) Basic standard ANSI IEEE c37.20.7 ratings\, (4) Arc type testing\, analysis and review\, (5) available designs and switch gear safety features. \nCrown Technical Systems was established in 1996 and has since developed a reputation of excellence in the field of major electrical equipment design and manufacturing for the Utility\, Power Generation\, Distribution and Transmission Industries. Over 80% of CTS products are shipped to investor owned utilities\, city owned utilities\, U.S.  Government and fossil fuels power generation projects. Other important customers are in the wind and solar renewable energy generation industry\, commuter transportation\, oil & gas\, EPC construction and industrial markets. \nPlease rsvp to Michael Wood: mmwood@Bechtel.com by noon on 3/21/2016.
