SUMMARY:Crimson Food and Wine Classic at Hamilton Cellars
DESCRIPTION:Join Washington State University Tri-Cities for a social evening of exquisite wine and food on April 14 as part of the Crimson Food and Wine Classic at Hamilton Cellars and proceeds will go to the university’s hospitality business management and wine business management programs. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. at Hamilton Cellars\, 55410 N Sunset Rd. in Benton City\, Washington\, and will feature six Hamilton wines paired with dishes developed by WSU Pullman lead chef Jamie Callison and WSU students that integrate local and season tastes and flavors. \n“It will be an excellent evening of examining and showcasing not only one of our region’s accomplished wineries\, but also the hospitality and wine expertise of our WSU Tri-Cities students\,” said Robert Harrington\, academic director of the WSU Tri-Cities Carson College of Business. “It should be a fun night of food\, wine and social networking\, as well as an excellent opportunity to get to know some of our accomplished students.” \nDuring the event\, students will also present food pairings\, manage the silent auction and interact with guests. An example pairing is House Smoked Salmon Bacon served with Roasted Northwest beets\, WSU Cougar Gold Cheese\, blushing beet stems and paired with 2013 Hamilton Cellars\, Weinbau Vineyard Cabernet Franc. \nThe cost is $75 per person on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nIf you are unable to attend but wish to contribute to the university’s hospitality business management and wine business management programs\, please click here to make a donation.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Seminar - Understanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor by Dr. Xingyuan Chen
DESCRIPTION:We will have a seminar tomorrow April 13\, 11:10 AM -12:00 PM in BSEL 104 on “Understanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor” by Dr. Xingyuan Chen\, who is a senior scientist in Atmospheric Measurements and Data group at PNNL. Please join us. \nUnderstanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor  \n  \nAbstract : This study seeks to understand how the hydrological exchange flows (HEFs) at the river water and groundwater interface are impacted by the dynamics of river flow and the heterogeneity in hydrogeologic properties in dynamic river corridor systems. We used a combination of field observations and high-resolution 3D numerical simulations (PFLOTRAN) to understand the complex spatial and temporal dynamics of HEFs from the km- to reach-scale (10s of km) along the regulated river corridor of the Hanford reach. The spatially distributed hourly data acquired from a monitoring well network at the Hanford site are used to define the initial and boundary conditions of groundwater aquifer\, as well as for calibrating and validating numerical models. The drilling logs of the wells and river bathymetry were used to conceptualize the hydrogeologic formations of the domain\, which show substantial variability in aquitard topography within the Hanford river corridor. Multiple numerical tracers are introduced at selected segments of river boundary to track the contribution of river water in the groundwater system. Particle tracking is run to reveal exchange pathways and estimate the distributions of river water residence time. \nAt the km-scale\, the exchange pathways exhibit strong heterogeneity along the river shoreline within a given flow window as impacted the physical heterogeneity in riverbed substrate and in the aquifer. The riverbed permeability (or conductance) and its spatial heterogeneity are identified as the most sensitive parameters of the HEF model. The exchange patterns also vary substantially across different flow regimes. Consequently\, the residence time distribution of river water in the groundwater system is featured by long tails and multiple modes. The reach-scale HEF model encompasses multiple hydromorphic features of the entire reach\, which showed increasingly more complex spatial and temporal patterns of HEFs as the scale grows. The HEF studies at both the km and reach scales fill in a critical need in bridging the gaps between hydromorphic-scale process understanding and robust predictions of the watershed hydrobiogeochemical function \nShort Bio: Dr. Xingyuan Chen is a research scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. She is a co-PI on a DOE science focus area project that studies Influences of Hydrologic Exchange Flows on River Corridor and Watershed Biogeochemical Function. Her main research expertise is in multiscale hydrobiogeochemical modeling and data assimilation. She got her PhD degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Master’s degree in Statistics from University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:“Hibakusha at the End of the World” by Japanese film maker Hitomi Kamanaka
DESCRIPTION:History will be made on Friday\, March 9\, when an atomic-bomb survivor (hibakusha) from Nagasaki\,\nMr. Mitsugi Moriguchi\, will visit Richland and tour Hanford’s B Reactor\, which produced plutonium\nfor the Nagasaki atomic bomb. He will be accompanied by a student from Nagasaki University\, Ms.\nHanako Mitsuoka. \nThe visit is part of a Nagasaki-Hanford Bridge Project sponsored by Consequences of Radiation\nExposure (CORE)\, a Washington state nonprofit\, and funded\, in part\, by the City of Nagasaki.\nThe project is spearheaded by Professor Emerita Norma Field of the University of Chicago and\nAssociate Professor Yuki Miyamoto of De Paul University in Chicago\, who is a second-generation\nhibakusha (that is\, at least one parent is an A-bomb survivor). Trisha Pritikin\, an Oakland attorney\nactive with Hanford downwinders\, is also part of the project team. \nA press conference with the visitors will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the\nHanford Reach Interpretive Center\, 1943 Columbia Park Trail. \nAlso on March 9 at 6:30 p.m.\, the documentary film “Hibakusha at the End of the World” by\nJapanese film maker Hitomi Kamanaka will be shown at the WSU Tri-Cities auditorium.\nIn current usage\, the term hibakusha identifies all human victims of radiation. The film brings\ntogether footage not only from Japan and Hanford\, but also Iraq (victims of depleted uranium\nmunitions). \nFollowing the two-hour film\, there will be an address by Mr. Moriguchi and a question and answer\nperiod. The event is open to the public.\nMedia contact: Jim Stoffels\, 946-8087
