DESCRIPTION:Dismantling Racism: The Game of Change\n\n\n\n\nOctober 29 | 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.\nOPEN TO STUDENTS\, STAFF\, FACULTY & TRI-CITIES COMMUNITY \n\n\n\n\nRacism in our world is not a new issue. In the current climate no one wants to be deemed “bad” but people struggle with maintaining systems of power and privilege and being deemed a “good” person.  While faculty and community practitioners have some knowledge of the historical roots of structural racism\, there is a lack of awareness of the impact of this social construct\, and that it is supported by implicit bias.  Through the lens of medical education and popular culture we will explore how this works and what we can do address and stifle it in academe and society. \nThis workshop/discussion will offer members of various communities the language and practices to move the “center at the margins” – that is to shift their view point from a majority group’s perspective to that of the marginalized group or groups. We plan to provide strategies to help faculty become more aware of the problems of bias and structural racism.  We will broach ways to reduce the systemic impact on resident and other faculty evaluations. Utilizing principles presented in work by Dr. Robert R. Gaiser on teaching professionalism: i.e. reflective thinking\, metacognition\, and transformational learning in a small group interactive environment we hope to translate practices that are applicable to things like sports culture and daily life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Thabiti Lewis\nThabiti Lewis is professor of English and interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at Washington State University\, Vancouver. He is also the editor of Conversations with Toni Cade Bambara and Ballers of the New School: Race and Sports in America. He writes extensively about masculinity\, sports\, and popular culture and has published work in the areas of literary studies and history and popular culture and critical race. He has lectured widely about critical race\, masculinity and sports culture. Professor Lewis conducts a workshop called “The Anti-racist Locker” and has worked with Dr. Theard to examine approaches for eliminating or reducing systemic racism in medical education and society. \n\nDr. Marie Theard\, MD\nDr. Theard completed her residency at University of Illinois in Chicago and a fellowship in Neuroanesthesia at Washington University in St. Louis.  She is currently director of Neuroanesthesia in the Dept. of Anesthesiology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland\, Oregon. Dr. Theard has published several articles illuminating the limitations of structural racism in academia and education\, conducted surveys on DEI\, and workshops examining approaches for eliminating or reducing systemic racism in medical education. As a former co-chair and now member of the Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion committee of the Society of Neurosciences in Anesthesiology and Critical care\, she has hosted conferences to address how to improve medical training in order to effect more equity and inclusion in medicine. DESCRIPTION:From Pity to Human Rights to Value Based: The Case for Authentic Inclusion of People with Disabilities with Sara Minkara\nFrom Pity to Human Rights to Value Based: The Case for Authentic Inclusion of People with Disabilities \nEstimates show that there are 1 billion people in the world with a disability\, that is 1/7 of the world’s population. And yet\, this ratio doesn’t come close to being represented in any of our spaces. Sara will make the case for the authentic inclusion of the one billion people with disabilities in the world by weaving together her own lived experiences as a blind\, Lebanese-American\, Muslim woman\, and the work of her organization\, Empowerment Through Integration (ETI). Sara approaches the inclusion of people with disabilities from a value-based lens\, and her mantra that “the inclusion of all is a value for all.” Sara is on a journey to engage every stakeholder in society\, and invites every one of us to engage in breaking the cycle of disempowerment\, moving from a charity perspective\, to human rights\, and finally the value-based approach to inclusion. \nBio: This presentation is hosted by empowerment and identify speaker\, Sara Minkara. Sara a blind Lebanese/American woman who lost her sight at a young age being just seven years old. Sara is the founder and president of Empowerment Through Integration (ETI)\, which aims to empower and include young people with visual impairment in the Middle East-North Africa region. As a blind woman herself\, speaker Sara Minkara knows the struggle of being disabled in our society. She is an advocate in the areas of disability inclusion and social entrepreneurship. SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid Training
DESCRIPTION:Mental Health First Aid consists of a 2-hour pre-work session followed by a 6-hour training that teaches skills to help someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis. \nParticipants learn about symptoms\, crisis response\, and active listening skills to support many disorders: \n\nDepression and anxiety\nTrauma\nPsychosis\nEating disorders\nSubstance abuse\n\nPre-registration is required and course seating is limited. We invite all WSU campus locations–Pullman\, Everett\, Tri-Cities\, Spokane\, Vancouver\, Yakima\, and Global–to participate. All sessions will be facilitated via Zoom. \nCost:\nWSU Pullman\, Global and Vancouver students – FREE (supported by student activity fees)\nWSU students from any other campus location (Everett\, Spokane\, Tri-Cities\, Yakima) – $50\nWSU faculty/staff from any campus location- $50 \nREGISTER NOW\nIf your department is paying for the training\, you can submit an IRI through the registration form\, or email Health Promotion. SUMMARY:Community Classroom | The Role of the Community in Disrupting the School-to-Prison Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:This panel will discuss the role of the community and schools\, in particular\, in reducing the number of individuals entering the prison system. Speaking from respective areas of expertise\, the moderated panel will discuss the possibilities and challenges of this work\, as well as share ideas about how communities can come together to support members most vulnerable to incarceration. \nSpeakers:\nDr. Ericka Walters \nDr. Ericka Walters holds a doctorate in education. She has served as a dedicated educator\, advocate and scholar in K-12 and higher education for more than 20 years. She is the founder and CEO of Launching Legacies\, a faith-based non-profit that helps individuals and families set and achieve goals and make significant life changes using positive psychology. This work now extends into the classroom through Dr. Walters’ work with transitional-aged youth (ages 16-25). \n  \nHarry B. Grant Jr. \nHarry Grant\, Jr.\, is a registered drug and alcohol counselor. Since his incarceration\, he has devoted his time to public sector and private\, faith-based interventions with the intention of “being of service to God and man.” Grant has experience with credit bearing and non-credit bearing prison education\, and has nearly completed his associates degree in Social Sciences. He is also a graduate of The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI)\, where he completed his seminary training in christian leadership. He aims to complete a master of arts degree in theology and ministry from Fuller Seminary. \n  \n  \nEmmanuel “Manny” Garcia \nEmmanuel “Manny” Garcia is a middle/high school counselor for the Soap Lake School District in Soap Lake\, Washington. Over the past six years\, he has been called upon by educators\, high schools\, community agencies\, universities\, community colleges\, and religious organizations to facilitate discussions that motivate students all across the region\, and more specifically to encourage and inspire students in support of their career aspirations and academic interests. He is an alumnus of Big Bend Community College\, Washington State University Tri-Cities\, and the TRiO Student Support Services program. He is currently earning a master’s of sciences at Gonzaga University and Capella University. In addition to serving his community as a school counselor\, he is also the project consultant/assistant program manager for Building The Bridges East – a mentorship program for at-risk youth (ages 12-18)\, whose organizational mission is to reduce youth crime and violence in Washington state. \n  \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

Richard King\nProfessor and Chair of Humanities\, History\, and Social Sciences\nColumbia College Chicago \nC. Richard King is a professor and chair of Humanities\, History and Social Sciences at Columbia College Chicago. His research concentrates on the racial politics of culture. He is particularly interested in uses and understandings of Indianness\, white supremacist movements and ideologies\, and the forms of memory\, representation\, identity\, and power animating race relations. Hoover\nAssociate Professor in the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program and Director of the Institute of Hate Studies\nGonzaga University \nDr. Kristine F. Hoover is a Professor at Gonzaga University in the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership and director of the Gonzaga Institute of Hate Studies. The Institute bridges the academy with community engagement\, through research\, teaching and partnerships with students\, staff\, faculty\, and community members. She is a former Chair of the Washington Legislative Ethics Board and former Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) trainer. Dr. Hoover is concerned with questions regarding how organizations and communities shape inclusion and cultures of dignity. She holds a PhD in American history from George Mason University. Her first book\, Rescue Board: The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe (Doubleday\, 2018)\, won the National Jewish Book Award for excellence in writing based on archival research.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][vc_single_image image=”102991″ img_size=”300×300″ alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5/6″][vc_column_text]Robert Bauman\nAcademic Director\, History Professor\nWashington State University Tri-Cities \nProfessor Bauman is an award-winning historian whose research interests are in 20th Century U.S. History\, social policy\, religion and race in the American West. He is the author of a number of articles and book chapters and two books\, Race and the War on Poverty: From Watts to East LA\, published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2008\, and Fighting to Preserve a Nation’s Soul: America’s Ecumenical War on Poverty\, published by the University of Georgia Press in 2019. He also is co-editor\, with Robert Franklin\, and co-author of Nowhere to Remember: Hanford\, White Bluffs and Richland to 1943\, published by WSU Press in 2018\, and of a yet untitled forthcoming volume on Race and Diversity in the Hanford region. His article\, “Jim Crow in the Tri-Cities\, 1943-1950” won the Charles Gates Award for the best article published in the Pacific Northwest Quarterly in 2005.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
