SUMMARY:CE Seminar Series - Evaluating Water Security in Jordan using a multi-agent hydroeconomic model with Dr. Jim Yoon - PNNL
DESCRIPTION:CE SEMINAR SERIES\nEveryone is encouraged to attend!\nFriday\, November 30th\, 2018\n12:10 – 1:00 pm | TFLO 133\nDr. Jim Yoon\nWater Security and Resilience Scientist\,\nPacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)\nEvaluating Water Security in Jordan using\na Multi-Agent Hydroeconomic Model\nAbstract\nJordan currently faces a water crisis of unprecedented severity\, dealing with the combined impacts\nof extremely limited water availability\, destabilizing regional conflict\, and adverse climate change\nimpacts. We developed a coupled human-natural system multi-agent model for the long-term\nevaluation of water security in Jordan\, the product of a multi-year international research effort\ncarried out by an interdisciplinary research team spanning the fields of hydrology\, water resources\nengineering\, political science\, geography\, and economics. The modular multi-agent model is used\nto evaluate interventions for enhancing Jordan’s water security\, integrating biophysical modules that\nsimulate natural and engineered systems with human modules that represent decision-making at both\ninstitutional and consumer levels. The model is run through the end of the 21st century to evaluate\nwater supply\, demand\, and institutional interventions over a wide range of plausible climate and\nsocioeconomic scenarios. Model results paint an alarming outlook of Jordan’s future water security\nwith nearly 60 percent of the country’s low-income household population experiencing water use\nbelow 40 liters per capita per day. Surface water supplies decrease by over 50 percent relative to\nhistorical conditions and groundwater wellfields near the main urban centers are depleted by over 50\npercent. Although climate and socioeconomic change will place extreme stress on the system under\nall conditions evaluated\, model results also indicate that an aggressive combination of supply and\ndemand management interventions can substantially reduce Jordan’s water insecurity through the\nend of the century.\nBio\nDr. Jim Yoon is a water security and resilience scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. At\nPNNL\, Jim focuses on the development of novel techniques to simulate water and interconnected\nsystems\, targeting solutions that can enhance critical infrastructure resilience under changing\nand adverse conditions. Prior to joining the labs\, Jim completed an M.S.\, Ph.D.\, and Postdoc at\nStanford University in the Earth System Science Department. His research at Stanford focused on the\ndevelopment of a multi-agent hydrologic-economic model for evaluation of water security in Jordan\nand the Middle East. Jim spearheaded the Jordan Water Project (JWP)\, an international interdisciplinary\nresearch project supported by a consortium of national science agencies with further assistance from\nUSAID. Prior to his work at Stanford\, Jim spent several years working as a water resources engineer\nat MWH Global in Southern California\, consulting for municipal clients across the western US. He is\nalso co-founder of WellDone International\, a San Francisco based non-profit organization working to\nsupport clean water and sanitation projects in underserved regions across the developing world. Jim\nholds a B.S. in Civil Engineering with an English Literature minor from UCLA.\nCivil and Environmental Engineering\nSchool of Engineering and Applied Sciences\nInterdisciplinary Excellence Built on World-Class Knowledge \n

SUMMARY:CE Seminar Series: Global Climate Change: A solvable but wicked Problem
DESCRIPTION:CE SEMINAR SERIES\nEveryone is encouraged to attend!\nFriday\, November 16th\, 2018\n12:10 – 1:00 pm | TFLO 133\nDr. Steve Ghan\nClimate Scientist\,\nPacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)\nGlobal Climate Change:\nA Solvable but Wicked Problem\nAbstract\nFossil fuels have played a major role in lifting humans out of poverty\, but the carbon dioxide\nemitted to the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned is driving global changes in the\nclimate system that threaten that prosperity. In this seminar\, Dr. Ghan will show how the\nglobal changes depend primarily on the total carbon emitted and the time for the changes\nto manifest. He will then summarize the various technologies readily available to replace\nfossil fuels\, and the barriers to adopting them. He will finish with a message of hope\,\ndescribing effective and durable political action that can overcome those barriers.\nBio\nSteven Ghan was a climate scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory from 1990\nto 2018 and PNNL Lab Fellow since 2011\, following five years at Lawrence Livermore National\nLaboratory and receiving his bachelors degree in Atmospheric Sciences from the University\nof Washington in 1979 and his doctorate in Meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute\nof Technology in 1988. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in representing\naerosol particles and their affects on clouds and climate in global climate models. He has\nauthored more than 180 publications in scientific journals\, is cited in the top 1% of all earth\nscientists\, and served as an editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmospheres\nfrom 2007 to 2016 and as Editor-in-Chief from 2012 to 2016. He has contributed to three\nclimate change assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, which in\n2008 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the assessments. He is a Fellow of the American\nGeophysical Union.

SUMMARY:WSU Tri-Cities Speaker Series - Fariba Alamdari\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:“If I don’t believe in my diversity\, why would anyone else?” \nIn a world in which many are raised to believe that our workplaces are responsible for raising us up\, recognizing our value\, and promoting us accordingly\, we are missing a key step in diversity and inclusion efforts. When we are fully accountable for our successes\, when we “own” our value\, and express our capabilities\, the “system” will advance and support us so we can do the work we are most called to do. If we wait for inclusion to come to us\, we may wait a lifetime. \nThis is Dr. Fariba Alamdari’s truth. It is her life experience\, and her results speak for themselves. \n“In a world in which many are raised to believe that our\nworkplaces are responsible for raising us up\, recognizing our\nvalue\, and promoting us accordingly\, we miss a key step in\ndiversity and inclusion efforts. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. at Hamilton Cellars\, 55410 N Sunset Rd. in Benton City\, Washington\, and will feature six Hamilton wines paired with dishes developed by WSU Pullman lead chef Jamie Callison and WSU students that integrate local and season tastes and flavors. \n“It will be an excellent evening of examining and showcasing not only one of our region’s accomplished wineries\, but also the hospitality and wine expertise of our WSU Tri-Cities students\,” said Robert Harrington\, academic director of the WSU Tri-Cities Carson College of Business. “It should be a fun night of food\, wine and social networking\, as well as an excellent opportunity to get to know some of our accomplished students.” \nDuring the event\, students will also present food pairings\, manage the silent auction and interact with guests. An example pairing is House Smoked Salmon Bacon served with Roasted Northwest beets\, WSU Cougar Gold Cheese\, blushing beet stems and paired with 2013 Hamilton Cellars\, Weinbau Vineyard Cabernet Franc. \nThe cost is $75 per person on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nIf you are unable to attend but wish to contribute to the university’s hospitality business management and wine business management programs\, please click here to make a donation.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Department of Energy Speakers Series - Groundwater Monitoring and Remediation
DESCRIPTION:Michael Cline\, Division Director\nSoil and Groundwater Division\nDepartment of Energy\, Richland Operations Office \nMr. Cline’s lecture will focus on the current sampling and monitoring program on the Hanford Site along with the groundwater remediation that is being performed. He will also discuss the process for selecting the remedy to be implemented.\nThe Hanford Site\, part of the DOE nuclear weapons complex\, encompasses about 580 square miles along the Columbia River in southeastern Washington State. During World War II and the Cold War period the government built and operated nine nuclear reactors for the production of plutonium and other nuclear materials. \nDuring reactor operations\, chemical and radioactive wastes were released into the environment and contaminated the soil and groundwater beneath portions of the Hanford Site.\nSince 1989\, using its authority under CERCLA\, DOE has worked to remediate this contamination. \nOver the lifetime of the Hanford Site\, DOE has installed and maintained thousands of wells to monitor and remediate groundwater and provide geologic data. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
