Richard King is a professor and chair of Humanities\, History and Social Sciences at Columbia College Chicago. His research concentrates on the racial politics of culture. He is particularly interested in uses and understandings of Indianness\, white supremacist movements and ideologies\, and the forms of memory\, representation\, identity\, and power animating race relations. Hoover is a Professor at Gonzaga University in the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership and director of the Gonzaga Institute of Hate Studies. The Institute bridges the academy with community engagement\, through research\, teaching and partnerships with students\, staff\, faculty\, and community members. She is a former Chair of the Washington Legislative Ethics Board and former Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) trainer. Dr. Hoover is concerned with questions regarding how organizations and communities shape inclusion and cultures of dignity. She holds a PhD in American history from George Mason University. He is the author of a number of articles and book chapters and two books\, Race and the War on Poverty: From Watts to East LA\, published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2008\, and Fighting to Preserve a Nation’s Soul: America’s Ecumenical War on Poverty\, published by the University of Georgia Press in 2019. He also is co-editor\, with Robert Franklin\, and co-author of Nowhere to Remember: Hanford\, White Bluffs and Richland to 1943\, published by WSU Press in 2018\, and of a yet untitled forthcoming volume on Race and Diversity in the Hanford region. His article\, “Jim Crow in the Tri-Cities\, 1943-1950” won the Charles Gates Award for the best article published in the Pacific Northwest Quarterly in 2005.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:Additive Manufacturing of Functional Polymer Composites\nSchool of Mechanical and Materials Engineering seminar series \nFriday\, April 9\n12:10 a.m. – 1 p.m. via Zoom\nRegister\nFunctional polymer composites are a highly demanded class of materials with enormous applications in electronics\, aerospace and defense\, transportation\, and energy segments. They offer unique combinations of characteristics\, including high specific mechanical properties\, tunable conductivity\, permittivity\, piezoresistivity\, etc.\, that are unachievable\, otherwise.This talk is devoted to the additive manufacturing (3D printing) of polymer composites and nanocomposites. \nAmir Ameli is an assistant professor of plastics engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His research interests encompass material design\, process development\, and characterization of multifunctional nanocomposites and bio-based polymeric systems. Prior to joining UMass Lowell\, he served as an assistant professor of mechanical and materials engineering at WSU from 2015-2019.

SUMMARY:Community Classroom | The Role of the Community in Disrupting the School-to-Prison Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:This panel will discuss the role of the community and schools\, in particular\, in reducing the number of individuals entering the prison system. Speaking from respective areas of expertise\, the moderated panel will discuss the possibilities and challenges of this work\, as well as share ideas about how communities can come together to support members most vulnerable to incarceration. \nSpeakers:\nDr. Ericka Walters \nDr. Ericka Walters holds a doctorate in education. She has served as a dedicated educator\, advocate and scholar in K-12 and higher education for more than 20 years. She is the founder and CEO of Launching Legacies\, a faith-based non-profit that helps individuals and families set and achieve goals and make significant life changes using positive psychology. This work now extends into the classroom through Dr. Walters’ work with transitional-aged youth (ages 16-25). \n  \nHarry B. Grant Jr. \nHarry Grant\, Jr.\, is a registered drug and alcohol counselor. Since his incarceration\, he has devoted his time to public sector and private\, faith-based interventions with the intention of “being of service to God and man.” Grant has experience with credit bearing and non-credit bearing prison education\, and has nearly completed his associates degree in Social Sciences. He is also a graduate of The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI)\, where he completed his seminary training in christian leadership. He aims to complete a master of arts degree in theology and ministry from Fuller Seminary. \n  \n  \nEmmanuel “Manny” Garcia \nEmmanuel “Manny” Garcia is a middle/high school counselor for the Soap Lake School District in Soap Lake\, Washington. Over the past six years\, he has been called upon by educators\, high schools\, community agencies\, universities\, community colleges\, and religious organizations to facilitate discussions that motivate students all across the region\, and more specifically to encourage and inspire students in support of their career aspirations and academic interests. He is an alumnus of Big Bend Community College\, Washington State University Tri-Cities\, and the TRiO Student Support Services program. He is currently earning a master’s of sciences at Gonzaga University and Capella University. In addition to serving his community as a school counselor\, he is also the project consultant/assistant program manager for Building The Bridges East – a mentorship program for at-risk youth (ages 12-18)\, whose organizational mission is to reduce youth crime and violence in Washington state. \n  \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter\, music technologist and multi-instrumentalist\, Noah Hoehn\, has performed for nearly 200 colleges and universities across the country. His unique and engaging solo show featuring marimba\, harmonica and Indian Dhol drum\, has been featured on PBS’s “Minnesota Original”. The Minnesotan is also a three-time winner of the prestigious McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians. His unique and dynamic performances could be described as one part Eddie Vedder\, one part Zedd and one part “marimba ninja”. Noah uses a style of looping called audio architecture to construct both mod covers and original music.
