SUMMARY:WSU Tri-Cities Speaker Series - Fariba Alamdari\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:“If I don’t believe in my diversity\, why would anyone else?” \nIn a world in which many are raised to believe that our workplaces are responsible for raising us up\, recognizing our value\, and promoting us accordingly\, we are missing a key step in diversity and inclusion efforts. When we are fully accountable for our successes\, when we “own” our value\, and express our capabilities\, the “system” will advance and support us so we can do the work we are most called to do. If we wait for inclusion to come to us\, we may wait a lifetime. \nThis is Dr. Fariba Alamdari’s truth. It is her life experience\, and her results speak for themselves. \n“In a world in which many are raised to believe that our\nworkplaces are responsible for raising us up\, recognizing our\nvalue\, and promoting us accordingly\, we miss a key step in\ndiversity and inclusion efforts. SUMMARY:CE Seminar Series - Evaluating Water Security in Jordan using a multi-agent hydroeconomic model with Dr. Jim Yoon - PNNL
DESCRIPTION:CE SEMINAR SERIES\nEveryone is encouraged to attend!\nFriday\, November 30th\, 2018\n12:10 – 1:00 pm | TFLO 133\nDr. Jim Yoon\nWater Security and Resilience Scientist\,\nPacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)\nEvaluating Water Security in Jordan using\na Multi-Agent Hydroeconomic Model\nAbstract\nJordan currently faces a water crisis of unprecedented severity\, dealing with the combined impacts\nof extremely limited water availability\, destabilizing regional conflict\, and adverse climate change\nimpacts. We developed a coupled human-natural system multi-agent model for the long-term\nevaluation of water security in Jordan\, the product of a multi-year international research effort\ncarried out by an interdisciplinary research team spanning the fields of hydrology\, water resources\nengineering\, political science\, geography\, and economics. The modular multi-agent model is used\nto evaluate interventions for enhancing Jordan’s water security\, integrating biophysical modules that\nsimulate natural and engineered systems with human modules that represent decision-making at both\ninstitutional and consumer levels. The model is run through the end of the 21st century to evaluate\nwater supply\, demand\, and institutional interventions over a wide range of plausible climate and\nsocioeconomic scenarios. Model results paint an alarming outlook of Jordan’s future water security\nwith nearly 60 percent of the country’s low-income household population experiencing water use\nbelow 40 liters per capita per day. Surface water supplies decrease by over 50 percent relative to\nhistorical conditions and groundwater wellfields near the main urban centers are depleted by over 50\npercent. Although climate and socioeconomic change will place extreme stress on the system under\nall conditions evaluated\, model results also indicate that an aggressive combination of supply and\ndemand management interventions can substantially reduce Jordan’s water insecurity through the\nend of the century.\nBio\nDr. Jim Yoon is a water security and resilience scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. At\nPNNL\, Jim focuses on the development of novel techniques to simulate water and interconnected\nsystems\, targeting solutions that can enhance critical infrastructure resilience under changing\nand adverse conditions. Prior to joining the labs\, Jim completed an M.S.\, Ph.D.\, and Postdoc at\nStanford University in the Earth System Science Department. His research at Stanford focused on the\ndevelopment of a multi-agent hydrologic-economic model for evaluation of water security in Jordan\nand the Middle East. Jim spearheaded the Jordan Water Project (JWP)\, an international interdisciplinary\nresearch project supported by a consortium of national science agencies with further assistance from\nUSAID. Prior to his work at Stanford\, Jim spent several years working as a water resources engineer\nat MWH Global in Southern California\, consulting for municipal clients across the western US. He is\nalso co-founder of WellDone International\, a San Francisco based non-profit organization working to\nsupport clean water and sanitation projects in underserved regions across the developing world. Jim\nholds a B.S. in Civil Engineering with an English Literature minor from UCLA.\nCivil and Environmental Engineering\nSchool of Engineering and Applied Sciences\nInterdisciplinary Excellence Built on World-Class Knowledge \n
