SUMMARY:Faculty & Staff Professional Development- “How to Talk About Race: Setting the Foundation for Anti-racism Work” Presented by Poet Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Poet Jordan presents “How to Talk About Race: Setting the Foundation for Anti-racism Work” \nWSU Tri-Cities faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to join this diversity\, equity and inclusion training focused on building shared understanding of terminology and concepts critical to having productive dialogue around race and racism. This interactive session will enable our campus community to begin a focused effort around anti-racism work\, and provide key knowledge to support our students in these conversations as they “return to campus” for student employment and their fall semester studies. This workshop is for people at all levels of awareness and engagement in their multicultural competency journey. The MOSAIC Center for Student Inclusion is excited to collaborate with local community leader\, artist and activist\, Jordan Chaney\, to provide this training. \nJordan Chaney is a Black Indigenous Person of Color\, poet\, speaker\, writer\, youth-mentor and all-around creative residing in Pasco\, Washington. \nIn 2018\, Jordan co-founded Hope Builders “a court to community pipeline”\, and with a team of dedicated community-leaders they created the Community Hope Wall\, a hope-based community mural project that raises awareness of the importance of having hope\, making art\, and listening to the incarcerated youth-voice. \n  \nJordan’s many accomplishments include: \nIn 2017\, Jordan was presented with the Commitment to Diversity award by the African American Community Cultural & Educational Society for his work in the community on race\, politics\, and social justice. \nIn 2014\, Jordan created Urban Poets Society\, a youth-leadership program that promotes public speaking\, performance arts\, peer-to-peer community engagement and outreach for the disadvantaged and marginalized youths in his community. \nHe has published three works of poetry and is the author of Art of the Spoken Word – a workbook/curriculum for enhancing communication skills\, creativity\, and confidence. He is also a guest columnist for the Tri-City Herald. \nJordan Chaney currently mentors youth in the arts at the Benton-Franklin Juvenile Justice Center. Chaney is one of two Tri-Citians appointed by Governor Inslee to the Task Force on Independent Investigations of Police Use of Force. For more information about Jordan and his work visit poetjordan.com. \n \n

SUMMARY:Empowered to Rise: Acknowledging My Multiple Identities with Jose Rosario
DESCRIPTION:Empowered to Rise: Acknowledging My Multiple Identities with Jose Rosario\nThis talk is where I share my personal story and discuss how acknowledging my identities changed the ways in which I engage in advocacy and clinical work. More specifically\, I talk about connecting with people because of my personal experiences of difference. This personal growth reminds me that each individual we support has intersecting identities that must be considered in order to truly promote healing. My hope is that by the end of the talk\, the audience begins to consider their identities and how this impacts their work. Above all\, I want to make it clear that our stories have power and being vulnerable allows us to connect. It is crucial to empower those who feel silenced to share their whole truth. \nBio: This presentation is hosted by empowerment speaker\, author\, and mental health and human rights activist\, Jose Rosario. Jose uses his disability to connect individuals to the world\, as a Latino\, gay man who utilizes a wheelchair\, Jose recognizes that there are common experiences that bring people together that taking stock of who we are gives us power. Rosario is a speaker\, author and above all\, an advocate. As a member of many diverse identity groups\, speaker José Rosario recognizes that there are common experiences that can bring people together and that taking stock of who we are gives us power. As a mental health professional\, José understands that this empowerment and the creation of a space to be vulnerable can lead to individual and group growth\, awakening agents for change. José is a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. student at Clark University where his work focuses on disparities in effective mental health care after violent events that target specific identity groups.\nWhen: November 4\, 2020 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm (PT) \nRegister for Jose Rosario’s Presentation on Empowered to Rise

SUMMARY:Master's proposal defense: Alexis Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Open to WSU Tri-Cities faculty\, staff\, and students. \nFinal Examination Announcement for Alexis Sullivan\, who will be defending her thesis proposal for the degree of Master of Science in Biology. The exam announcement is to be posted in a public space within the department. As a publicly-funded institution of higher education\, all WSU final exams are required to be open to the public without exception. \nAlexis Sullivan’s Master’s proposal defense will be held on Tuesday\, April 12 at noon over Zoom. \n  \nTitle: Impact of invasion by annual grasses on mycorrhizal inoculation potential in the Palouse Prairie.  \n  \nAbstract: The Palouse Prairie is one of the most critically endangered ecosystems in the United States\, with less than 1% of native prairie remaining. The native prairie that remains today is increasingly threatened by land-use change and invasive species. The invasive winter annual grass Ventenata dubia has become a dominant threat to native prairie remnants\, as it decreases native plant species diversity and native plant species richness. Although we have seen the effects of V. dubia on native plant communities since its introduction in the 1950’s\, the impact V. dubia may have on soil microbial communities such as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi is not known. My graduate work has focused on understanding the impact that V. dubia invasion has\, if any\, on AM fungi in the Palouse Prairie. \n  \nZoom Link: https://wsu.zoom.us/j/94290055300?pwd=RVN4cXZIRnd3V0xwZmhuQnZUWGpIdz09  \nMeeting ID: 942 9005 5300 \nPasscode: 879413[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
