SUMMARY:Faculty & Staff Professional Development- “How to Talk About Race: Setting the Foundation for Anti-racism Work” Presented by Poet Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Poet Jordan presents “How to Talk About Race: Setting the Foundation for Anti-racism Work” \nWSU Tri-Cities faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to join this diversity\, equity and inclusion training focused on building shared understanding of terminology and concepts critical to having productive dialogue around race and racism. This interactive session will enable our campus community to begin a focused effort around anti-racism work\, and provide key knowledge to support our students in these conversations as they “return to campus” for student employment and their fall semester studies. This workshop is for people at all levels of awareness and engagement in their multicultural competency journey. The MOSAIC Center for Student Inclusion is excited to collaborate with local community leader\, artist and activist\, Jordan Chaney\, to provide this training. \nJordan Chaney is a Black Indigenous Person of Color\, poet\, speaker\, writer\, youth-mentor and all-around creative residing in Pasco\, Washington. \nIn 2018\, Jordan co-founded Hope Builders “a court to community pipeline”\, and with a team of dedicated community-leaders they created the Community Hope Wall\, a hope-based community mural project that raises awareness of the importance of having hope\, making art\, and listening to the incarcerated youth-voice. \n  \nJordan’s many accomplishments include: \nIn 2017\, Jordan was presented with the Commitment to Diversity award by the African American Community Cultural & Educational Society for his work in the community on race\, politics\, and social justice. \nIn 2014\, Jordan created Urban Poets Society\, a youth-leadership program that promotes public speaking\, performance arts\, peer-to-peer community engagement and outreach for the disadvantaged and marginalized youths in his community. \nHe has published three works of poetry and is the author of Art of the Spoken Word – a workbook/curriculum for enhancing communication skills\, creativity\, and confidence. He is also a guest columnist for the Tri-City Herald. \nJordan Chaney currently mentors youth in the arts at the Benton-Franklin Juvenile Justice Center. Chaney is one of two Tri-Citians appointed by Governor Inslee to the Task Force on Independent Investigations of Police Use of Force. SUMMARY:Dismantling Racism: The Game of Change | Community Classroom Series
DESCRIPTION:Dismantling Racism: The Game of Change\n\n\n\n\nOctober 29 | 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.\nOPEN TO STUDENTS\, STAFF\, FACULTY & TRI-CITIES COMMUNITY \n\n\n\n\nRacism in our world is not a new issue. In the current climate no one wants to be deemed “bad” but people struggle with maintaining systems of power and privilege and being deemed a “good” person.  While faculty and community practitioners have some knowledge of the historical roots of structural racism\, there is a lack of awareness of the impact of this social construct\, and that it is supported by implicit bias.  Through the lens of medical education and popular culture we will explore how this works and what we can do address and stifle it in academe and society. \nThis workshop/discussion will offer members of various communities the language and practices to move the “center at the margins” – that is to shift their view point from a majority group’s perspective to that of the marginalized group or groups. We plan to provide strategies to help faculty become more aware of the problems of bias and structural racism.  We will broach ways to reduce the systemic impact on resident and other faculty evaluations. Utilizing principles presented in work by Dr. Robert R. Gaiser on teaching professionalism: i.e. reflective thinking\, metacognition\, and transformational learning in a small group interactive environment we hope to translate practices that are applicable to things like sports culture and daily life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Thabiti Lewis\nThabiti Lewis is professor of English and interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at Washington State University\, Vancouver. He is also the editor of Conversations with Toni Cade Bambara and Ballers of the New School: Race and Sports in America. He writes extensively about masculinity\, sports\, and popular culture and has published work in the areas of literary studies and history and popular culture and critical race. He has lectured widely about critical race\, masculinity and sports culture. Professor Lewis conducts a workshop called “The Anti-racist Locker” and has worked with Dr. Theard to examine approaches for eliminating or reducing systemic racism in medical education and society. \n\nDr. Marie Theard\, MD\nDr. Theard completed her residency at University of Illinois in Chicago and a fellowship in Neuroanesthesia at Washington University in St. Louis.  She is currently director of Neuroanesthesia in the Dept. of Anesthesiology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland\, Oregon. Dr. Theard has published several articles illuminating the limitations of structural racism in academia and education\, conducted surveys on DEI\, and workshops examining approaches for eliminating or reducing systemic racism in medical education. As a former co-chair and now member of the Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion committee of the Society of Neurosciences in Anesthesiology and Critical care\, she has hosted conferences to address how to improve medical training in order to effect more equity and inclusion in medicine. In an effort to engage Portland’s African American community\, she was recently awarded a mentorship grant from the American Society of Anesthesiology’s Professional Diversity Committee to begin a pipeline project to increase interest among African American high school students for careers in medicine.\n \n\nRegister for Event\nSee more Community Classroom Events at https://tricities.wsu.edu/diversity/community-classroom-series/

SUMMARY:Empowered to Rise: Acknowledging My Multiple Identities with Jose Rosario
DESCRIPTION:Empowered to Rise: Acknowledging My Multiple Identities with Jose Rosario\nThis talk is where I share my personal story and discuss how acknowledging my identities changed the ways in which I engage in advocacy and clinical work. More specifically\, I talk about connecting with people because of my personal experiences of difference. This personal growth reminds me that each individual we support has intersecting identities that must be considered in order to truly promote healing. My hope is that by the end of the talk\, the audience begins to consider their identities and how this impacts their work. Above all\, I want to make it clear that our stories have power and being vulnerable allows us to connect. It is crucial to empower those who feel silenced to share their whole truth. \nBio: This presentation is hosted by empowerment speaker\, author\, and mental health and human rights activist\, Jose Rosario. Jose uses his disability to connect individuals to the world\, as a Latino\, gay man who utilizes a wheelchair\, Jose recognizes that there are common experiences that bring people together that taking stock of who we are gives us power. Rosario is a speaker\, author and above all\, an advocate. As a member of many diverse identity groups\, speaker José Rosario recognizes that there are common experiences that can bring people together and that taking stock of who we are gives us power. As a mental health professional\, José understands that this empowerment and the creation of a space to be vulnerable can lead to individual and group growth\, awakening agents for change. José is a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. student at Clark University where his work focuses on disparities in effective mental health care after violent events that target specific identity groups.\nWhen: November 4\, 2020 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm (PT) \nRegister for Jose Rosario’s Presentation on Empowered to Rise
