SUMMARY:Faculty & Staff Professional Development- “How to Talk About Race: Setting the Foundation for Anti-racism Work” Presented by Poet Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Poet Jordan presents “How to Talk About Race: Setting the Foundation for Anti-racism Work” \nWSU Tri-Cities faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to join this diversity\, equity and inclusion training focused on building shared understanding of terminology and concepts critical to having productive dialogue around race and racism. This interactive session will enable our campus community to begin a focused effort around anti-racism work\, and provide key knowledge to support our students in these conversations as they “return to campus” for student employment and their fall semester studies. This workshop is for people at all levels of awareness and engagement in their multicultural competency journey. The MOSAIC Center for Student Inclusion is excited to collaborate with local community leader\, artist and activist\, Jordan Chaney\, to provide this training. \nJordan Chaney is a Black Indigenous Person of Color\, poet\, speaker\, writer\, youth-mentor and all-around creative residing in Pasco\, Washington. \nIn 2018\, Jordan co-founded Hope Builders “a court to community pipeline”\, and with a team of dedicated community-leaders they created the Community Hope Wall\, a hope-based community mural project that raises awareness of the importance of having hope\, making art\, and listening to the incarcerated youth-voice. \n  \nJordan’s many accomplishments include: \nIn 2017\, Jordan was presented with the Commitment to Diversity award by the African American Community Cultural & Educational Society for his work in the community on race\, politics\, and social justice. \nIn 2014\, Jordan created Urban Poets Society\, a youth-leadership program that promotes public speaking\, performance arts\, peer-to-peer community engagement and outreach for the disadvantaged and marginalized youths in his community. \nHe has published three works of poetry and is the author of Art of the Spoken Word – a workbook/curriculum for enhancing communication skills\, creativity\, and confidence. He is also a guest columnist for the Tri-City Herald. \nJordan Chaney currently mentors youth in the arts at the Benton-Franklin Juvenile Justice Center. Chaney is one of two Tri-Citians appointed by Governor Inslee to the Task Force on Independent Investigations of Police Use of Force. SUMMARY:CE Seminar Series - Evaluating Water Security in Jordan using a multi-agent hydroeconomic model with Dr. Jim Yoon - PNNL
DESCRIPTION:CE SEMINAR SERIES\nEveryone is encouraged to attend!\nFriday\, November 30th\, 2018\n12:10 – 1:00 pm | TFLO 133\nDr. Jim Yoon\nWater Security and Resilience Scientist\,\nPacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)\nEvaluating Water Security in Jordan using\na Multi-Agent Hydroeconomic Model\nAbstract\nJordan currently faces a water crisis of unprecedented severity\, dealing with the combined impacts\nof extremely limited water availability\, destabilizing regional conflict\, and adverse climate change\nimpacts. We developed a coupled human-natural system multi-agent model for the long-term\nevaluation of water security in Jordan\, the product of a multi-year international research effort\ncarried out by an interdisciplinary research team spanning the fields of hydrology\, water resources\nengineering\, political science\, geography\, and economics. The modular multi-agent model is used\nto evaluate interventions for enhancing Jordan’s water security\, integrating biophysical modules that\nsimulate natural and engineered systems with human modules that represent decision-making at both\ninstitutional and consumer levels. The model is run through the end of the 21st century to evaluate\nwater supply\, demand\, and institutional interventions over a wide range of plausible climate and\nsocioeconomic scenarios. Model results paint an alarming outlook of Jordan’s future water security\nwith nearly 60 percent of the country’s low-income household population experiencing water use\nbelow 40 liters per capita per day. Surface water supplies decrease by over 50 percent relative to\nhistorical conditions and groundwater wellfields near the main urban centers are depleted by over 50\npercent. Although climate and socioeconomic change will place extreme stress on the system under\nall conditions evaluated\, model results also indicate that an aggressive combination of supply and\ndemand management interventions can substantially reduce Jordan’s water insecurity through the\nend of the century.\nBio\nDr. Jim Yoon is a water security and resilience scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. At\nPNNL\, Jim focuses on the development of novel techniques to simulate water and interconnected\nsystems\, targeting solutions that can enhance critical infrastructure resilience under changing\nand adverse conditions. Prior to joining the labs\, Jim completed an M.S.\, Ph.D.\, and Postdoc at\nStanford University in the Earth System Science Department. His research at Stanford focused on the\ndevelopment of a multi-agent hydrologic-economic model for evaluation of water security in Jordan\nand the Middle East. Jim spearheaded the Jordan Water Project (JWP)\, an international interdisciplinary\nresearch project supported by a consortium of national science agencies with further assistance from\nUSAID. Prior to his work at Stanford\, Jim spent several years working as a water resources engineer\nat MWH Global in Southern California\, consulting for municipal clients across the western US. He is\nalso co-founder of WellDone International\, a San Francisco based non-profit organization working to\nsupport clean water and sanitation projects in underserved regions across the developing world. Jim\nholds a B.S. in Civil Engineering with an English Literature minor from UCLA.\nCivil and Environmental Engineering\nSchool of Engineering and Applied Sciences\nInterdisciplinary Excellence Built on World-Class Knowledge \n

SUMMARY:Seminar - Understanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor by Dr. Xingyuan Chen
DESCRIPTION:We will have a seminar tomorrow April 13\, 11:10 AM -12:00 PM in BSEL 104 on “Understanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor” by Dr. Xingyuan Chen\, who is a senior scientist in Atmospheric Measurements and Data group at PNNL. Please join us. \nUnderstanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor  \n  \nAbstract : This study seeks to understand how the hydrological exchange flows (HEFs) at the river water and groundwater interface are impacted by the dynamics of river flow and the heterogeneity in hydrogeologic properties in dynamic river corridor systems. We used a combination of field observations and high-resolution 3D numerical simulations (PFLOTRAN) to understand the complex spatial and temporal dynamics of HEFs from the km- to reach-scale (10s of km) along the regulated river corridor of the Hanford reach. The spatially distributed hourly data acquired from a monitoring well network at the Hanford site are used to define the initial and boundary conditions of groundwater aquifer\, as well as for calibrating and validating numerical models. The drilling logs of the wells and river bathymetry were used to conceptualize the hydrogeologic formations of the domain\, which show substantial variability in aquitard topography within the Hanford river corridor. Multiple numerical tracers are introduced at selected segments of river boundary to track the contribution of river water in the groundwater system. Particle tracking is run to reveal exchange pathways and estimate the distributions of river water residence time. \nAt the km-scale\, the exchange pathways exhibit strong heterogeneity along the river shoreline within a given flow window as impacted the physical heterogeneity in riverbed substrate and in the aquifer. The riverbed permeability (or conductance) and its spatial heterogeneity are identified as the most sensitive parameters of the HEF model. The exchange patterns also vary substantially across different flow regimes. Consequently\, the residence time distribution of river water in the groundwater system is featured by long tails and multiple modes. The reach-scale HEF model encompasses multiple hydromorphic features of the entire reach\, which showed increasingly more complex spatial and temporal patterns of HEFs as the scale grows. The HEF studies at both the km and reach scales fill in a critical need in bridging the gaps between hydromorphic-scale process understanding and robust predictions of the watershed hydrobiogeochemical function \nShort Bio: Dr. Xingyuan Chen is a research scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. She is a co-PI on a DOE science focus area project that studies Influences of Hydrologic Exchange Flows on River Corridor and Watershed Biogeochemical Function. Her main research expertise is in multiscale hydrobiogeochemical modeling and data assimilation. She got her PhD degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Master’s degree in Statistics from University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Understanding and Managing Leave
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for faulty and staff only and addresses the most typical leave issues managers and supervisors need to manage. It addresses such questions as: \nWhat type of leave should my employee be using? \nWhen is their leave request something I handle at the departmental leave\, and when should it be directed to HRS? \nHow can the work be done when I have an employee who is off work for an extended period of time? \nDo the same rules apply when medical leave is due to an on-the-job injury versus an ongoing condition? \n*Recommended for all WSU supervisors\, leads\, and time administrators\, this course helps clarify your understanding of this complicated issue.
