SUMMARY:CE Seminar Series - Uncertainty quantification and reduction with conditional Gaussian process models in high dimensional stochastic systems
DESCRIPTION:Ramakrishna Tipireddy\, Ph.D.\nResearch Scientist in the Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate \nPacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) \n  \nAbstract\nThis talk will present a brief introduction to uncertainty quantification (UQ) quantification methods for\nhigh dimensional stochastic PDEs and introduce conditional Gaussian process (GP) models for uncertainty\nreduction. The PDE coefficient is represented as a log-normal random field\, with the corresponding\nGaussian part modeled as a zero-mean Gaussian process (GP) with appropriate covariance function. The\nreduction in uncertainty is achieved by conditioning the GP model on observations of the coefficient at a\nfew spatial locations. The resulting conditional GP model is then discretized using truncated Karhunen-\nLo`eve (KL) expansion and the stochastic solution of the PDE is computed using Monte Carlo and sparsegrid\ncollocation methods. Finally\, uncertainty in the system is further reduced by adaptively selecting\nadditional observation locations using two active learning criteria. The first criteria minimizes the\nvariance of the PDE coefficient\, while the second criteria employs approximately minimizes the variance\nof the solution of the PDE.\nBio\nThis talk will present a brief introduction to uncertainty quantification (UQ) quantification methods for\nhigh dimensional stochastic PDEs and introduce conditional Gaussian process (GP) models for uncertainty\nreduction. SUMMARY:MME Seminar Series - Vortex-Breakdown and Wall-Separation States in Swirling Flows in Finite-Length Pipes
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe dynamics of inviscid-limit\, incompressible and axisymmetric swirling flows in finite-length\, long circular pipes\nwith varying geometries is studied through global analysis techniques and numerical simulations. The inlet flow is\ndescribed by fixed-in-time profiles of the circumferential and axial velocity together with a fixed azimuthal vorticity\,\nwhile the outlet flow is characterized by a state with zero radial velocity. A numerical algorithm based on the upwind\nfinite-difference method for the evolution of the circulation and azimuthal vorticity together with a Poisson solver for\nthe solution of the stream function in terms of the azimuthal vorticity is developed. The convergence of computed\nresults with mesh refinement is demonstrated. Moreover\, a mathematical analysis that is based on the Squire-Long\nequation (SLE) is formulated to identify steady-state solutions of the problem with special conditions to describe\nstates with separation zones. These solutions include the base columnar flow state\, a decelerated flow along the\ncenterline\, an accelerated flow along the centerline\, a vortex-breakdown state and a wall-separation state. The\nproblem is then reduced to the columnar (axially independent) SLE\, with centerline and wall conditions for the\nsolution of the outlet flow stream function. The numerical simulations realize the various flow states and show\ncorrelation between time-asymptotic states and steady states predicted according to the SLE and the columnar\nSLE problems. The simulations also shed light on the stability of the various steady states. Results show that pipe\ndivergence promotes the appearance of breakdown states at lower inlet swirl levels while pipe contraction delays\nthe appearance of vortex breakdown to higher swirl levels and promotes formation of wall-separation states. The\ninfluence of various inlet swirling flow profiles on the manifold of steady states in a straight\, finite-length pipe and\non flow dynamics is also investigated. Depending on the inlet profiles\, flows may first exhibit vortex breakdown while\nothers wall-separation states. \nMME Seminar_Flyer_Zhang_02.22.2019

SUMMARY:National TRIO Day
DESCRIPTION:In honor of National TRIO Day\, TRIO Student Support Services is hosting a celebration event next Wednesday March 6\, 2019.  Leading up to and at the event we will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the WSUTC Cougar Cupboard.  In addition\, our students have been signing up for local volunteer opportunities such as tutoring support at the Family Learning Center\, providing workshops at the Kids Engineering Day at Jeffereson Elementary\, and offering mentorship for the Dream It\, Be It conference. \n  \nOverview of National TRIO Day: \n\nOn February 24\, 1986\, a congressional resolution (H. Con. Res. 278) declared that Saturday\, February 28\, 1986\, should be designated as “National TRIO Day” to commemorate the annual achievements of the Federal TRIO programs in communities across the country.\nEvery year since then\, our community has reserved the fourth Saturday in February as National TRIO Day — an opportunity to focus the nation’s “attention on the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives if they are to become contributing citizens of the country\, and to the talent which will be wasted if that investment is not made.”\nFor many programs\, National TRIO Day has become a tradition as it allows students who benefit from the TRIO programs and to give back to their local communities through acts of service.\n\n  \nPlease join us next week\, and bring a non-perishable food item\, in the Atrium beginning at 11:00 am as TRIO Student Support Services celebrates National TRIO Day.  There will be guest speakers from PNNL\, activities hosted by our students\, and light appetizers.   \n

SUMMARY:Campus lecture and discussion - Expert Women Explore The Heavy Burden Of Hanford Cleanup
DESCRIPTION: In celebration of Women’s History Month\, the Northwest News Network’s Anna King will present her award-winning public radio project Daughters of Hanford at WSU Tri-Cities. \nAfterwards\, King will moderate a panel discussion with three of those featured expert women. The event starts at 5 p.m.\, March 21\, in WSU Tri-Cities’ East Auditorium. \n“These women have intense experiences\, great depth of knowledge and funny stories to share about Hanford\,” says Anna King\, who also appears on WSU’s Northwest Public Broadcasting. “Hanford is a heavy burden that we all inherit and these women’s wisdom is invaluable.” \nWSU Tri-Cities\, WSU WiSTEM and the Women Chemist Committee of the American Chemical Society\, Richland Section\, are presenting the entertaining program together. \nDaughters is oral histories\, portraits and personal archives of women who changed the World War II plutonium production site\, and women who were changed by it. The evening’s panel discussion will feature three Daughters of Hanford: retired Washington State Ecology geologist Zelma Maine Jackson\, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Frannie Smith and retired head of Washington State Ecology’s Hanford program\, Jane Hedges. \n“Women’s contributions to the Hanford site and the Manhattan Project sites across the country\, but especially at Hanford\, are unknown\,” says Zelma Maine Jackson. “When you think of the nuclear industry you think of men\, you never think of women. But more than likely they performed 90 percent of the hard work — the laborious\, tedious\, number crunching\, dictating a letter\, making a policy come into effect — it’s always been the mental heavy load carried by women.” \nDaughters of Hanford was created in partnership with WSU Tri-Cities\, The REACH\, and Northwest Public Broadcasting. Daughters is a series\, a museum installation and a radio documentary. Daughters was awarded the Washington State Historical Society’s David Douglas award. \n“This won’t be a stiff lecture\, or a glum chat\,” King says about the upcoming event at WSU Tri-Cities. “Bring a young woman or girl and grab a seat for this entertaining evening full of dynamic sound\, surprising Northwest stories\, poignant moments and laughter.” \nDaughters gets its name from nuclear science. “Daughter products” are isotopes formed by radioactive decay of some other isotope. Daughters collaborators include: WSU Tri-Cities’s associate professor of fine arts Doug Gast\, Seattle-based photographer Kai-Huei Yau\, and newly-minted APM podcast editor Phyllis Fletcher. You can listen to the audio stories and explore the full project and photography at daughtersofhanford.org.

SUMMARY:AVID for Higher Education - Disrupting Deficit Narratives Through Equity-Minded Practice
DESCRIPTION:Disrupting Deficit Narratives\nThrough Equity-Minded Practice\nWASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY\, TRI-CITIES\, WA\nAs a precursor to student engagement\, motivation matters. The literature is overrun with deficit thinking about diverse\nstudents\, their families\, cultures\, socioeconomic background\, abilities\, and communities. Educators frequently lament\nabout how to motivate students to “care” about their learning. Yet\, very few have the opportunity to participate in the\nwork needed to foster the equity mindedness to disrupt these deficit narratives.\nThe news illustrates examples where college administrators\, faculty\, and staff miss the mark on how to cultivate\npositive learning environments where all students can thrive. Further\, many institutions lack resources needed to\nengage and support faculty and staff in proactive preparation to better serve a diverse student body. Research says\nthat students learn and thrive in environments in which they feel included\, heard\, and valued. \nFor more information\, see the flyer.
