SUMMARY:WSU Tri-Cities Speaker Series - Fariba Alamdari\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:“If I don’t believe in my diversity\, why would anyone else?” \nIn a world in which many are raised to believe that our workplaces are responsible for raising us up\, recognizing our value\, and promoting us accordingly\, we are missing a key step in diversity and inclusion efforts. When we are fully accountable for our successes\, when we “own” our value\, and express our capabilities\, the “system” will advance and support us so we can do the work we are most called to do. If we wait for inclusion to come to us\, we may wait a lifetime. \nThis is Dr. Fariba Alamdari’s truth. It is her life experience\, and her results speak for themselves. \n“In a world in which many are raised to believe that our\nworkplaces are responsible for raising us up\, recognizing our\nvalue\, and promoting us accordingly\, we miss a key step in\ndiversity and inclusion efforts. If we wait for inclusion to come\nto us\, we may wait a lifetime.” \nIs there an event website or URL?\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/355687185251456/

SUMMARY:Campus Lecture: The Internet of Things: a Security and Privacy Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Billions of internet-connected devices autonomously controlling your home and environment: what could possibly go wrong? This talk will introduce the Internet of Things (IoT) and cover some of the security and privacy risks it exposes people to every day. From television sets that spy on you to remotely hacked vehicles\, IoT security and privacy issues affect everyone in our connected society. \nCome hear about the issues society faces\, the way forward for solutions from research and legislation\, and what you can do to protect yourself and your family from runaway security and privacy risks.\nDr. Glenn A. Fink has worked in areas including computer security\, visualization\, bio-inspired software design\, and human-centric computing at PNNL since 2006. He is a lateral thinker who excels in visionary leadership of multidisciplinary teams. His history of successful leadership is reflected in the many projects for which he has been Principal Investigator (PI). Dr. Fink was the project lead and primary inventor of several technologies including PNNL’s Digital Ants technology\, which earned an award for Excellence in Technology Transfer from the Federal Laboratory Consortium in 2018.

SUMMARY:Seminar - Understanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor by Dr. Xingyuan Chen
DESCRIPTION:We will have a seminar tomorrow April 13\, 11:10 AM -12:00 PM in BSEL 104 on “Understanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor” by Dr. Xingyuan Chen\, who is a senior scientist in Atmospheric Measurements and Data group at PNNL. Please join us. \nUnderstanding km- to Reach-Scale Hydrological Exchange Flows along a Large Dam-Regulated River Corridor  \n  \nAbstract : This study seeks to understand how the hydrological exchange flows (HEFs) at the river water and groundwater interface are impacted by the dynamics of river flow and the heterogeneity in hydrogeologic properties in dynamic river corridor systems. We used a combination of field observations and high-resolution 3D numerical simulations (PFLOTRAN) to understand the complex spatial and temporal dynamics of HEFs from the km- to reach-scale (10s of km) along the regulated river corridor of the Hanford reach. The spatially distributed hourly data acquired from a monitoring well network at the Hanford site are used to define the initial and boundary conditions of groundwater aquifer\, as well as for calibrating and validating numerical models. The drilling logs of the wells and river bathymetry were used to conceptualize the hydrogeologic formations of the domain\, which show substantial variability in aquitard topography within the Hanford river corridor. Multiple numerical tracers are introduced at selected segments of river boundary to track the contribution of river water in the groundwater system. Particle tracking is run to reveal exchange pathways and estimate the distributions of river water residence time. \nAt the km-scale\, the exchange pathways exhibit strong heterogeneity along the river shoreline within a given flow window as impacted the physical heterogeneity in riverbed substrate and in the aquifer. The riverbed permeability (or conductance) and its spatial heterogeneity are identified as the most sensitive parameters of the HEF model. The exchange patterns also vary substantially across different flow regimes. Consequently\, the residence time distribution of river water in the groundwater system is featured by long tails and multiple modes. The reach-scale HEF model encompasses multiple hydromorphic features of the entire reach\, which showed increasingly more complex spatial and temporal patterns of HEFs as the scale grows. The HEF studies at both the km and reach scales fill in a critical need in bridging the gaps between hydromorphic-scale process understanding and robust predictions of the watershed hydrobiogeochemical function \nShort Bio: Dr. Xingyuan Chen is a research scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. She is a co-PI on a DOE science focus area project that studies Influences of Hydrologic Exchange Flows on River Corridor and Watershed Biogeochemical Function. Her main research expertise is in multiscale hydrobiogeochemical modeling and data assimilation. She got her PhD degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Master’s degree in Statistics from University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Department of Energy Speakers Series - Groundwater Monitoring and Remediation
DESCRIPTION:Michael Cline\, Division Director\nSoil and Groundwater Division\nDepartment of Energy\, Richland Operations Office \nMr. Cline’s lecture will focus on the current sampling and monitoring program on the Hanford Site along with the groundwater remediation that is being performed. He will also discuss the process for selecting the remedy to be implemented.\nThe Hanford Site\, part of the DOE nuclear weapons complex\, encompasses about 580 square miles along the Columbia River in southeastern Washington State. During World War II and the Cold War period the government built and operated nine nuclear reactors for the production of plutonium and other nuclear materials. \nDuring reactor operations\, chemical and radioactive wastes were released into the environment and contaminated the soil and groundwater beneath portions of the Hanford Site.\nSince 1989\, using its authority under CERCLA\, DOE has worked to remediate this contamination. \nOver the lifetime of the Hanford Site\, DOE has installed and maintained thousands of wells to monitor and remediate groundwater and provide geologic data. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Washington State University and the Auction of Washington Wines are partnering to host the 3rd Annual Tri-Cities Wine and Music Festival on Saturday\, June 10. \n\n \nArny Bailey and Friends band to provide classic rock at Wine and Jazz Festival \n\nTicket prices range from $85 per person for the festival to $950 for a weekend package for two that includes the Col Solare Vintner Dinner on Friday and hotel accommodations through the weekend. Several ticket packages are available online at the Auction of Washington Wines website. \nProceeds from the event benefit WSU  viticulture and enology research that helps the Northwest region stay competitive in the national and global wine market\, while providing sustainable growth in the industry. Research projects funded through Auction of Washington Wines provide students with hands-on training and create a workforce to meet the growing needs of the grape and wine industry.\nThe Wine and Jazz Festival starts at 6 p.m. at the WSU Tri-Cities campus in Richland. The event will include classic rock from Arny Bailey and Friends\, featuring Peter Rivera\, formerly of Rare Earth\, along with food from the Olive Café in Walla Wall and wine tasting from more than 20 Washington wineries. The festival is sponsored by Numerica Credit Union\, Russ Dean RV and URock Radio. \nSince its inception in 1988\, the Auction of Washington Wines has raised more than $37 million. The distinguished fundraising events give wine lovers the chance to support the Washington wine industry and families in the communities around the region. \n  \nMedia Contact: \n\nKaury Balcom\, WSU Viticulture & Enology\, 509-372-7223\, kaury.balcom@wsu.edu
