DESCRIPTION:Dismantling Racism: The Game of Change\n\n\n\n\nOctober 29 | 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.\nOPEN TO STUDENTS\, STAFF\, FACULTY & TRI-CITIES COMMUNITY \n\n\n\n\nRacism in our world is not a new issue. In the current climate no one wants to be deemed “bad” but people struggle with maintaining systems of power and privilege and being deemed a “good” person.  While faculty and community practitioners have some knowledge of the historical roots of structural racism\, there is a lack of awareness of the impact of this social construct\, and that it is supported by implicit bias.  Through the lens of medical education and popular culture we will explore how this works and what we can do address and stifle it in academe and society. \nThis workshop/discussion will offer members of various communities the language and practices to move the “center at the margins” – that is to shift their view point from a majority group’s perspective to that of the marginalized group or groups. We plan to provide strategies to help faculty become more aware of the problems of bias and structural racism.  We will broach ways to reduce the systemic impact on resident and other faculty evaluations. Utilizing principles presented in work by Dr. Robert R. Gaiser on teaching professionalism: i.e. reflective thinking\, metacognition\, and transformational learning in a small group interactive environment we hope to translate practices that are applicable to things like sports culture and daily life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Thabiti Lewis\nThabiti Lewis is professor of English and interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at Washington State University\, Vancouver. He is also the editor of Conversations with Toni Cade Bambara and Ballers of the New School: Race and Sports in America. He writes extensively about masculinity\, sports\, and popular culture and has published work in the areas of literary studies and history and popular culture and critical race. He has lectured widely about critical race\, masculinity and sports culture. Professor Lewis conducts a workshop called “The Anti-racist Locker” and has worked with Dr. Theard to examine approaches for eliminating or reducing systemic racism in medical education and society. \n\nDr. Marie Theard\, MD\nDr. Theard completed her residency at University of Illinois in Chicago and a fellowship in Neuroanesthesia at Washington University in St. Louis.  She is currently director of Neuroanesthesia in the Dept. of Anesthesiology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland\, Oregon. Dr. Theard has published several articles illuminating the limitations of structural racism in academia and education\, conducted surveys on DEI\, and workshops examining approaches for eliminating or reducing systemic racism in medical education. As a former co-chair and now member of the Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion committee of the Society of Neurosciences in Anesthesiology and Critical care\, she has hosted conferences to address how to improve medical training in order to effect more equity and inclusion in medicine. DESCRIPTION:Each year Washington State University and the National Student Employment Association (NACE) recognizes the outstanding contributions and achievements of students who work while attending college through the National Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) award. \nDue to the unusual circumstances resulting from the COVID‑19 Pandemic\, NSEA will recognize three (3) top students from each region. All students recognized for the 2021 year will be spotlighted on their webpage. \nOur student\, Noah Sanchez nominated by Ray Luna from Cougs Rise\, won our region in 2020. SUMMARY:Herbert Parker Lecture | Radium in Pennsylvania - Miracle or Menace
DESCRIPTION:Radium in Pennsylvania – Miracle or Menace \nSince the announcement of the Curies’ discovery of radium in late 1898\, the scientific and medical community\, as well as the public\, has been fascinated with the potential use in treatment of disease and various medical conditions. Interest continues into current times in drama and literature. Sadly some of the early radium treatments were not grounded in scientific research\, and would now be considered quack medicine. The early use of radium in various industrial applications is also noteworthy. This presentation will provide an overview of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s history and experiences with sites involving radium\, where the material was manufactured\, stored\, and used for various medical and industrial applications\, including a few radioactive quack cures. From 1910 into the 1920s\, some of the first commercial radium production facilities were located in PA.  \nIn May of 1921\, Marie Curie and her daughters visited the U.S. and toured the facilities in Pittsburgh that produced the gram of radium purchased by the women of America\, and presented to Madam Curie by President Harding.  Around 1920 the use of radium in luminescent material for watches and aircraft gauges began in many locations\, including PA. Effective use of radium in cancer therapy also began around this timeframe\, with major radium source manufacturing operations being in Pittsburgh.  The production of radium shifted to Belgium and Canada in the 1930s\, with significant advances in cancer therapy. During the ‘30s Herbert M. Parker made significant contributions to the radiation dosimetry of such therapy. Historically radium was used in various products\, at numerous locations\, from circa 1910 through (as recent as) 2005. The sites are often found with significant building(s) and local soil contaminated with radium. Beginning in the 1960s\, as contaminated buildings and properties were discovered\, the state would take the lead or become directly involved with federal clean-up efforts at such facilities. Regrettably\, radium sources and their use were not well controlled or regulated through the years.  It was only with the passage of the Energy Policy Act in 2005 that NRC gained authority over discrete radium sources and related facility contamination. This was also a forcing function for regulatory uniformity at the state level. A few years ago the NRC directed one of their contractors to do an historical review of radium use in Agreement States and non-AS. The findings of these reviews were transmitted to each state. NRC conducted two ‘government-to-government’ webinars with the states in October 2016 to discuss outreach and the path forward in general. The Commonwealth was asked to present its experiences with radium contaminated sites. Of particular interest to the NRC\, states\, and property owners was the surface and volume contamination release criteria used for clean-ups\, radon measurements\, funding of clean-ups\, waste disposal options\, and public\, property owner\, and local government outreach and lessons-learned.   \nThis presentation will review our past and ongoing efforts to address the radium contaminated sites in Pennsylvania. With all such sites and past work with radium\, there is a concern of health effects with workers and members of the public. The presentation will also illustrate how the Commonwealth has led in this area\, including the ongoing efforts to monitor and mitigate radon in buildings from natural occurring radium in soil\, and a recent extensive evaluation of radium that returns with oil & gas production. From these many experiences\, one might pose the question ‘is radium a miracle or a menace?’ The author will explain his thoughts\, rationale\, and conclusion for the answer.  \n \n  \nSpeaker\nDavid J. Allard\, MS\, CHP\, FHPS\nDirector\, Pennsylvania State Bureau of Radiation Protection  \nMr. Allard is the State of Pennsylvania’s Director of the Bureau of Radiation Protection where he is responsible for accelerator\, X-ray\, environmental surveillance\, nuclear safety\, radiological emergency response\, radioactive materials\, decommissioning / site clean-up\, low-level radioactive waste and radon programs. He is the Governor’s official liaison to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission\, and the technical lead on oil & gas radium and industry-generated NORM/TENORM issues. Mr. Allard received an associate in applied science degree in Environmental Health Technology from Hudson Valley Community College\, a bachelor of science degree in Environmental Sciences from SUNY Albany\, and a master of science degree in Radiological Sciences & Protection from U Mass – Lowell’s Department of Applied Physics. He is certified by the American Board of Health Physics\, a Fellow of the Health Physics Society (HPS)\, and has acted as the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors’ (CRCPD) liaison to the National Council on Radiation Protection & Measurement (NCRP) for over 15 years. Dave has been in various leadership roles with the HPS and CRCPD; as a Director in both organizations\, Treasurer of the HPS\, and past Chairperson of the CRCPD. He is also a member of the AAPM\, ANS\, NRRPT and SNMMI. Mr. Allard also serves as a member or advisor on several national and international radiation protection committees. He has authored numerous professional papers and reports\, and frequently lectures on a wide variety of radiation protection topics and concerns.    \n

Richard King is a professor and chair of Humanities\, History and Social Sciences at Columbia College Chicago. His research concentrates on the racial politics of culture. He is particularly interested in uses and understandings of Indianness\, white supremacist movements and ideologies\, and the forms of memory\, representation\, identity\, and power animating race relations. Hoover\nAssociate Professor in the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program and Director of the Institute of Hate Studies\nGonzaga University \nDr. Kristine F. Hoover is a Professor at Gonzaga University in the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership and director of the Gonzaga Institute of Hate Studies. The Institute bridges the academy with community engagement\, through research\, teaching and partnerships with students\, staff\, faculty\, and community members. She is a former Chair of the Washington Legislative Ethics Board and former Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) trainer. Dr. Hoover is concerned with questions regarding how organizations and communities shape inclusion and cultures of dignity. She holds a PhD in American history from George Mason University. He is the author of a number of articles and book chapters and two books\, Race and the War on Poverty: From Watts to East LA\, published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2008\, and Fighting to Preserve a Nation’s Soul: America’s Ecumenical War on Poverty\, published by the University of Georgia Press in 2019. He also is co-editor\, with Robert Franklin\, and co-author of Nowhere to Remember: Hanford\, White Bluffs and Richland to 1943\, published by WSU Press in 2018\, and of a yet untitled forthcoming volume on Race and Diversity in the Hanford region. His article\, “Jim Crow in the Tri-Cities\, 1943-1950” won the Charles Gates Award for the best article published in the Pacific Northwest Quarterly in 2005.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
