DESCRIPTION:Additive Manufacturing of Functional Polymer Composites\nSchool of Mechanical and Materials Engineering seminar series \nFriday\, April 9\n12:10 a.m. – 1 p.m. via Zoom\nRegister\nFunctional polymer composites are a highly demanded class of materials with enormous applications in electronics\, aerospace and defense\, transportation\, and energy segments. They offer unique combinations of characteristics\, including high specific mechanical properties\, tunable conductivity\, permittivity\, piezoresistivity\, etc.\, that are unachievable\, otherwise.This talk is devoted to the additive manufacturing (3D printing) of polymer composites and nanocomposites. \nAmir Ameli is an assistant professor of plastics engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His research interests encompass material design\, process development\, and characterization of multifunctional nanocomposites and bio-based polymeric systems. Prior to joining UMass Lowell\, he served as an assistant professor of mechanical and materials engineering at WSU from 2015-2019.

SUMMARY:Community Classroom | The Role of the Community in Disrupting the School-to-Prison Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:This panel will discuss the role of the community and schools\, in particular\, in reducing the number of individuals entering the prison system. Speaking from respective areas of expertise\, the moderated panel will discuss the possibilities and challenges of this work\, as well as share ideas about how communities can come together to support members most vulnerable to incarceration. \nSpeakers:\nDr. Ericka Walters \nDr. Ericka Walters holds a doctorate in education. She has served as a dedicated educator\, advocate and scholar in K-12 and higher education for more than 20 years. She is the founder and CEO of Launching Legacies\, a faith-based non-profit that helps individuals and families set and achieve goals and make significant life changes using positive psychology. This work now extends into the classroom through Dr. Walters’ work with transitional-aged youth (ages 16-25). \n  \nHarry B. Grant Jr. \nHarry Grant\, Jr.\, is a registered drug and alcohol counselor. Since his incarceration\, he has devoted his time to public sector and private\, faith-based interventions with the intention of “being of service to God and man.” Grant has experience with credit bearing and non-credit bearing prison education\, and has nearly completed his associates degree in Social Sciences. He is also a graduate of The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI)\, where he completed his seminary training in christian leadership. He aims to complete a master of arts degree in theology and ministry from Fuller Seminary. \n  \n  \nEmmanuel “Manny” Garcia \nEmmanuel “Manny” Garcia is a middle/high school counselor for the Soap Lake School District in Soap Lake\, Washington. Over the past six years\, he has been called upon by educators\, high schools\, community agencies\, universities\, community colleges\, and religious organizations to facilitate discussions that motivate students all across the region\, and more specifically to encourage and inspire students in support of their career aspirations and academic interests. He is an alumnus of Big Bend Community College\, Washington State University Tri-Cities\, and the TRiO Student Support Services program. He is currently earning a master’s of sciences at Gonzaga University and Capella University. In addition to serving his community as a school counselor\, he is also the project consultant/assistant program manager for Building The Bridges East – a mentorship program for at-risk youth (ages 12-18)\, whose organizational mission is to reduce youth crime and violence in Washington state. \n  \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Bruce Napier\, a senior scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory\, will discuss his work regarding the Mayak plutonium production site in Russia\, which has many similarities to the Hanford Site in Richland\, as part of a lecture at 5 p.m. on Oct. 30 in the Washington State University Tri-Cities East Auditorium. \nNapier has been a principal investigator for several U.S.-Russian Joint Coordinating Committee on Radiation Effects Research projects\, which have sponsored studies estimating radiation doses that were received by individuals or populations\, as well as epidemiological studies around the Mayak plutonium production site. \nNapier will discuss the history of the Mayak site and point out parallels and contrasts with the Hanford Site for his lecture at WSU Tri-Cities. He will also describe the radiation doses received by more than 28\,000 workers at Mayak and the 60\,000 members of the nearby public exposed to atmospheric and river-borne releases of radioactive materials along the Techa River in Russia\, in addition to the results of the associated health studies.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:Regional community members\, students\, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a feedback session and workshop to identify goals for a new Washington State University Tri-Cities Center for Inclusion and Student Success from noon – 2 p.m. Wednesday\, April 24\, in Floyd 140. \nDuring the whole event\, individuals can drop by to share their thoughts on what inclusion means to them\, what they want in an inclusion center\, how they want the center to look and function\, as well as what resources would allow for the greatest success for students and others who use the center. \nAt 1 p.m.\, WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor Sandra Haynes will provide a short presentation\, which will be followed by remarks by Mary Jo Gonzales\, WSU Vice President of Student Affairs\, as well as student leaders with the Associated Students of WSU Tri-Cities. \nLunch will be provided from noon-2:00 p.m. as part of the event.

SUMMARY:Campus lecture and discussion - Expert Women Explore The Heavy Burden Of Hanford Cleanup
DESCRIPTION: In celebration of Women’s History Month\, the Northwest News Network’s Anna King will present her award-winning public radio project Daughters of Hanford at WSU Tri-Cities. \nAfterwards\, King will moderate a panel discussion with three of those featured expert women. The event starts at 5 p.m.\, March 21\, in WSU Tri-Cities’ East Auditorium. \n“These women have intense experiences\, great depth of knowledge and funny stories to share about Hanford\,” says Anna King\, who also appears on WSU’s Northwest Public Broadcasting. “Hanford is a heavy burden that we all inherit and these women’s wisdom is invaluable.” \nWSU Tri-Cities\, WSU WiSTEM and the Women Chemist Committee of the American Chemical Society\, Richland Section\, are presenting the entertaining program together. \nDaughters is oral histories\, portraits and personal archives of women who changed the World War II plutonium production site\, and women who were changed by it. The evening’s panel discussion will feature three Daughters of Hanford: retired Washington State Ecology geologist Zelma Maine Jackson\, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Frannie Smith and retired head of Washington State Ecology’s Hanford program\, Jane Hedges. \n“Women’s contributions to the Hanford site and the Manhattan Project sites across the country\, but especially at Hanford\, are unknown\,” says Zelma Maine Jackson. “When you think of the nuclear industry you think of men\, you never think of women. But more than likely they performed 90 percent of the hard work — the laborious\, tedious\, number crunching\, dictating a letter\, making a policy come into effect — it’s always been the mental heavy load carried by women.” \nDaughters of Hanford was created in partnership with WSU Tri-Cities\, The REACH\, and Northwest Public Broadcasting. Daughters is a series\, a museum installation and a radio documentary. Daughters was awarded the Washington State Historical Society’s David Douglas award. \n“This won’t be a stiff lecture\, or a glum chat\,” King says about the upcoming event at WSU Tri-Cities. “Bring a young woman or girl and grab a seat for this entertaining evening full of dynamic sound\, surprising Northwest stories\, poignant moments and laughter.” \nDaughters gets its name from nuclear science. “Daughter products” are isotopes formed by radioactive decay of some other isotope. Daughters collaborators include: WSU Tri-Cities’s associate professor of fine arts Doug Gast\, Seattle-based photographer Kai-Huei Yau\, and newly-minted APM podcast editor Phyllis Fletcher. SUMMARY:Wyatt Wineinger to present history of Day's Pay Bomber
DESCRIPTION:On September 28th at the East Auditorium from 6-8PM\, Mr. Wyatt Wineinger\, the son of the pilot of the Day’s Pay bomber\, will be giving a talk about the history of the Day’s Pay bomber and it’s missions and crew. The Day’s Pay was a B-17 bomber purchased by employees of the Hanford Engineer Works in 1944 who were encouraged to “give a day’s pay and send a bomber on its way” to the European theater. The plane was purchased with these individual donations\, had a short ceremony here at the Hanford Construction Camp (about 10 miles north of our campus near the town of Hanford)\, and then flew over 60 missions in Europe before being excessed and scrapped at the end of the war. More historical information on the Day’s Pay can be found at http://www.historylink.org/File/7491. \nThe Hanford History Project is helping a local historian\, Don Sorenson\, plan events commemorating this history. Mr. Wineinger will be visiting us for several days from his home in Holcomb\, KS and this Presentation/Q&A will also feature artifacts and archival material from the Day’s Pay and some of the crew reunions. This talk is open to students\, staff\, faculty\, and the general public. Please tell your students and consider attending what is sure to be an interesting talk and discussion!
