The Junior Writing Portfolio is a mid-career diagnostic to determine if students’ writing abilities have advanced in ways that can handle the writing demands of upper-division courses and courses in their major. Specific submission guidelines and forms are online and available for download as pdfs. They include step-by-step instructions on how to complete the Writing Portfolio.
The Writing Portfolio identifies students who demonstrate a need for structured writing support with upper-division writing requirements, as well as recognizes the standard of writing expected of all WSU graduates.
Because writing skills can make the difference between success and failure in the professional world, WSU aims to prepare graduates for success.
The Junior Writing Portfolio has two elements: a Time-Write and a Packet. You will need to complete both portions before your writing is assessed by faculty in the Department of English.
The Timed Writing consists of two impromptu essays written during a single, supervised two-hour session. One essay will be argumentative and the other will be a self-evaluation.
You will need to bring a photo ID and two pens (no pencils) to the session. We will provide a Blue Book and a dictionary.
Choose three pieces of your best writing. This includes any assigned college-level writing: lab reports, case studies, group projects, creative work, memos, in-class writing, traditional essays, and work from other schools. It is best if you have different types of assignments to represent the range of your writing skills.
Fill out a cover sheet for each selection. Cover sheets are provided in the envelope or are available to download on this site.
Ask the instructor who assigned and graded the paper to sign the cover sheet as “Acceptable” or “Exceptional.”
If the instructor is unavailable to sign the cover sheet, an email from the instructor will be an acceptable alternative and should include verification that the paper is your work and deserves a rating of “Acceptable” or “Exceptional.” Print the email and attach it to a cover sheet.
Turn in the Packet to Kristy Valenciano in West 263E, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
