Advising Structure

Guidance and Support

You are required to meet with your academic advisor a minimum of one time each semester about your academic planning. This regular meeting ensures that you are making timely progress toward graduation. Depending on the level of help that you need, an academic advising session can last as few as ten minutes or up to an hour or more.

You can choose from three session options to meet the advising requirement.

Majors and Academic Planning Sessions (MAPS) are held in a group setting and are pre-advisement sessions that are held each semester before priority registration. Academic advisors and faculty mentors lead these workshops and provide registration information and schedule building tools so you will make progress toward meeting your graduation requirements.

Each semester, you will be assigned a priority registration date based on the number of credits you have earned. You will see the date in your myWSU student center and there are several benefits to meeting with an advisor early.

If you meet before registration begins, you will have more time to work adjust your schedule and resolve any issues such as a Junior Writing Portfolio hold or deciding on which minor will best complement your major.

If you weren’t able to participate in MAPS, or need more direction, you can schedule an individual advising session any time during the semester.  You can schedule meetings through the Student Success Collaborative.

One-on-one sessions can help you solve problems you may be having during the semester, connect you to campus resources, or just help you clarify your goals.

The e-advising session is ideal for you if you are self-directed and confident that you know and understand your graduation requirements. You can submit your schedule to your academic advisor, who will review it, correct it or make suggestions, and return it to you via email.
